Installing SI Transducer w/ Tunnel Hull & Sponsons
« on: July 21, 2014, 01:58:46 PM »
Hello all,

I just recently purchased a 698ci HD SI combo and I'm having a difficulty finding a place to mount the transducer it came with.  My boat is aluminum with a tunnel hull and sponsons.  The original transducer I had was mounted to the back of the sponson with no issues at all.  With the SI, I'm afraid mounting it there will put it right in line with the motor.  There is not any room to mount it to the transom so I'm looking for input as to what the best options would be.  I've read that I might be able to trim the motor up but not sure it will work with my application.  Can I mount it on the inside of one of the sponsons hanging below the bottom of the boat?  Any input would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks for your time.

I'll try to attach a few pics of what I'm talking about.

Regards.

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums TZAG DAC.

Looks like your boat may give us some additional mounting issues to work through with the tunnel hull and sponsons.
Here are the options as I see them:
1. Mount the CSi transducer on the back of a sponson and hope you can raise the motor up far enough that it does not block the Si sonar to that side.  You could get an idea of how well this will work by having someone hold the transducer in place and trimming the motor up.
2. Really this is just a variation for the prior mounting if you find it won’t work.  Add a spacer between the transducer mount and the sponson.  This will move the transducer backwards away from the sponson so that the motor will not have to be trimmed up as much.
3. Install a second CSi transducer on the opposite sponson and connect both transducers to the 698 unit via the AS-Si-LR-Y cable.
I don’t think that mounting the transducer inside of one of the sponsons will work well due to the turbulent water coming from the propeller.

Thanks for the quick input Greg.  I'll have to look into this a bit but I'll be sure to post the finished product.

Is the CSI Transducer different than the one I already have?

The CSi transducer is the Compact Side Imaging transducer that comes with the 698ci HD Si unit.  It is the same one that you have now (XNT-9-Si-180-T).
