998 & Terrova Issue
« on: May 10, 2012, 10:50:01 PM »
I just got my 998 back from Humminbird as I sent them in to be fixed and this one had a bad circuit board or parts on it that they had to replace. Got it back today, hooked up to the bow, and nothing.. no "Ticking" This is the same issue I was having before I sent it in. i thought this would do the trick but nope. Any ideas?

Chet,
My 898 will sometimes start ticking at power up. But as soon as it doesn't get a return signal the ticking stops. Other times there is no ticking on power up. unit has performed flawlessly for over a year.
Do a water test that's where it's supposed to work, not in the garage  ;)

Ya, I know what you mean. But It worked when I bought the boat brand new last year for a while. and then it stopped. I sent in the units and also took my minn kota in and the minn kota guy said everything was within spec. So could it be the adapter wire?

Chet,
Can you explain "adapter wire"?
Each unit should be wired directly to the cranking battery with an inline spade fuse. An awful lot of problems I read about on the boards, come from not being wired directly to the battery that's the first place I'd look.

Is your 1198 back yet? Can you swap unit heads just to see if that makes any difference?
I have heard of some putting their transducer in a bucket of water to test this ticking.

You should on-water test it before doing anything else.
It could be the adapter wire that is causing the proble, but I would wait for the on-water test before purchasing a new one.  If it does not work than try testing it on the 1198's transducer as Nicko suggested.

Nicko: there is an adapter wire that is needed to go from the Minn Kota connector type to the Humminbird connector type.

I mean the wire that connects HB to Minn Kota..

Both fish finders came back together and they told me nothing was wrong with my 1198. So thats a whole other topic later. :-) Not sure why all the problems when I bought this boat directly from the manufacturer (Skeeter in Kilgore, TX) last spring. I can say im not too happy, but I have to get them figured out as we leave for the Cabelas NTC on the 23rd!!

Greg, whats the correct cable I'd need for the 998 to the Minn Kota?

It would be the MKR-US2-8 but all you will get from the US2 transducer is the 200/83kHz 2D sonar and water temperature.

Those are the two units I have. I was told that the US2 is only for 2D not SI or DI.

The US2 is not fully compatible (will allow all sonar capabilities) with the 998c Si and 1198c Si units but it is compatible with the 2D (200/83kHz) sonar.  Basically the US2 is the DualBeam transducer that we sell for use as a 2D sonar (only) transducer for these same units.

Can Hummibird make these into a SI and DI unit? It should not be that hard. What is the difference between a tranducer and an  US2 unit?

It wouldn't be up to Humminbird to do this, it would have to be Minn Kota.  Since Johnson Outdoors owns both companies, there might be a path for them to influence this.

That would be a good option to have....SI transducer built into the trolling motor with all necessary noise shielding.
**Looking for the one that makes it all worthwhile**
