Title: Upgrading transducer on helix side imige is it worth it
Post by: bass monkey on August 08, 2015, 12:51:15 PM
Does anyone know if you upgrade the standard definition transducer on the side image that Hummingbird gives you for the helix si to the high definition transducer that it makes that much of a big difference on the picture quality on the down image and side image anyone have any experience with this

Copied from your other post ...:

The piezoes in the upgrade HDSI xducer will give somewhat crisper images ...

See Wayne's comparison shots here ...:

For the small amount of $$ for the upgrade ... I think it's worth it ...

I have the same question and had read this post  http://www.bbcboards.net/humminbird-image-interpretation/583834-hd-vs-compact-transducer.html. (http://www.bbcboards.net/humminbird-image-interpretation/583834-hd-vs-compact-transducer.html.)
BUT... I've read that the Helix 5 and 7 cannot produce images from the 800kHz crystal in the HD transducer.  A sales person said that frequency is most useful for improving shallow water images.  Great, since that's mostly where I'll fish, except maybe the 7 can't use it.  What I know about these newer fishfinders is what I've read over the past couple weeks.  I suspect that the HD transducer may only improve SI/DI and would do nothing to improve the 2d images, but I'm not even positive about that.  Maybe someone with more knowledge could enlighten us.  Several have recommended upgrading from the standard (compact) XNT 9 SI 180 T to the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T.  But maybe they didn't realize the Helix series can't use 800kHz (if that's true of course).

If any helix users have comparison images that would be great.

There are not separate SI piezoes for the different frequencies in the SI xducers ...

SI Piezoes are designed to vibrate at either "1 resonate frequency" (as in the 455kHz only of the XNT 9 SI 180 T) ... Or at a "Dual resonate frequency" (as in the 455kHz or 800kHz of the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T) ...

The Helix can only transmit the 455kHz signal ... So it cannot utilize the 800kHz vibration capability of the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T ...

But ... The Helix can take advantage of the longer SI piezoes housed inside the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T ...

Piezo characteristics state that longer "bar type" piezoes physically create a thinner SI beam ...Thinner beam = better detail ...

So in a nutshell ... The Helix still will only be able to transmit the 455kHz signal thru the upgrade XHS 9 HDSI 180 T ... But the 455kHz SI images will be a little crisper ... Simply because the SI piezoes are longer in the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T ...

And you are correct ... The upgrade XHS 9 HDSI 180 T does not create better 2d ... It's the same 2d piezo as in the stock XNT 9 SI 180 T ...

Thanks Rickie.  Your reply helps confirm and clarify the upgrade differences for the Helix 7. Do you think the images Wayne shot using his 1198 (which does use the 800kHz piezo I assume) will be representative of what we will see on the Helix 7?

Yes I think Wayne's shots will be representative of the difference you can expect with the upgrade xducer ...

It's not night and day difference ... But it is better ...
