Title: Tuning for best botom view.
Post by: SGann on February 25, 2010, 10:54:32 PM
I have a 798c SI Combo and plan to use it to look for bottom features in saltwater from 30 to 100 feet. How do I tune it for best bottom imaging?

SI Sinsitivity best left in Auto?

When you reduce the side imaging range, does that increase the resolution in the smaller area or just stop recording returns beyond that range?  Are you just leaving data that can be used or increasing the amount of data within the reduced range? For recording for later playback in humviewer  / yellowfin should I leave the range maxed out?

When ever I am searching a new area It is usually 40 feet or less so I keep my side to side range at 80 or 90. To a certain degree the less range you set then you will have a better image of targets or bottom features. As far as sensitivity mine stays at 12. I only fish and do not look for diving places. My COPD prevents me from diving safely so I gave up diving.

Sgann,  The best way to tune your unit is to use the arrow key to stop your unit.  Get your SI on full screen both sides.  Just punch your arrow key one time and the cursor will show up.  This will stop your screen from scrolling. Now here is the time to play with the setting and to observe the effects.  Play with your sensitivity.  Usually the deeper the water the higher the sensitivity.  The shallower the less.  Just know that your sensitivity setting will vary with water depth.  I mostly use 455khz 90% of the time.  One of the best features that I like is the sharpness option under the SI enhance tab.  I like putting that on the low setting.  To me that just makes the image pop.  Once you have the screen tuned the way you like it maybe you'd like to navigate through the different color pallets to see which one you feel gives you the best seperation, clarity.  I personally like the blue and the amber 1.  Once your set hit exit and your unit will continue to scroll and scan the bottom

Thanks for the suggestions. I hope to have enough time on the water to truly give it a workout and become proficient with it.
