898c SI Powering down sequence
« on: June 21, 2011, 01:53:08 PM »
Anyone else having issues with powering down the 898c SI? Most often, I have to repeatedly hit and hold the power button in order for it to power down. One would think the first time you push and hold it for the 3 second countdown it should work but it doesn't. Any causes?

Thx in advance.

If you are firmly holding the power button in for the required time, than it should be shutting down.
Does the powering down in 3 seconds message show the whole time that you are holding down the power button?
Maybe you got an intermittent power button?

The "Powering down in 3 seconds" does not always come on but I do hear a beep when I press the button. Sometimes it starts to countdown...then it disappears.

I seem to recall some issues with the power button (switch) in past conversations. I dont think this is a severe quality issue, none the less one that is or has had some problems. Possibly a cycle of parts in the past. More so for the "98" series of units than others..

I would contact HB cust support and see about an RMR for repair.

This of course willl require you giving up the unit for a short period of time.... :'(

The power switch is the only "key" on the units I have seen or heard of possible problems.

I really think it was a bad batch of switches.  Any way  catch the big one and then get the unit in for repair.. ;D

I had the intermittent Powering Off problem when I first got my 898. I sent it in for repair under warranty and it still has the same problem. Humminbird could not find anything wrong with the unit. I have just learned to live with the problem... sometimes it shuts down on the first try... other times it takes 2 or 3 tries at holding the power button down until the unit decides to shut down.

My 898 does it too.  Not too bad though.  As long as I don't mash the button it shuts off/starts the countdown almost every single time (nice easy push of the button).  Mash it and it is hit and miss.

That may be what a lot of users are running into here: they “mash” the power and other buttons.  When they do this the contacts inside the unit get deformed and do not close the switch.  An easier press of the button may work better.

Any chance of getting a stronger switch.  This should not happen..unless you hit it with a hammer..

These are not the mechanical type of switch that you are thinking of Chuck.  Basically behind the button is a pillar of material that has a contact on it that mates with a contact on the PCB.  If the button is pressed downwards past the contact point, or if it is not pressed directly downwards, the two contacts do not always mate.  This results in a button that does not appear to work.  Most of the time if you use a lighter touch the buttons work fine.

I understand these circuit board switches, but still they should work with a strong push.  Again, dont hit it with a hammer is all...
They are similiar to your keys on the computer keyboard.  You can hit them fairly hard with out causing a problem..

As long as it is a straight strike they will work.  Problem is when folks start ‘mashing’ buttons they tend not to do so in a straight line with the button.  I didn’t believe this until a saw a live demo of this.

Maybe a more forgiving switch is needed.  Like other computer devices have...
A strong push should be accepted.  If you wack the key then it probably will have a heart attack..

I received my unit back after sending it into HB back in March...wow..turn around was only 5 days!! Now that's customer service! I installed the unit and powered up & down several times with no issue. And to add to the previous comments, I was pressing the button the same way I did when I started to find problems with the orginal switch. Not mashing it or pushing it at an angle.

If the switch is designed to only function properly when pressed exactly straight and with "x" amount of pressure, then it's designed wrong for a consumer product...in my opinion. I am an electrical engineer by trade and was surprised to hear that the switch was that finicky. As Chuck stated, the switch should be more forgiving...assuming it's a quality switch.

You would think that since the 898c is one of the newest units,
that Humminbird would have improved the switch over
older models, or at least maintained the previous quality.

Not good to see switch problems in newer units.
Could mean they are saving some coin by using cheaper parts.

ITG,
The 898 units use the same switches as are used in the other 800 series units, the 958c, 958c DI, 998c Si and (at elast) the 1158c, 1158c DI and 1198c Si units (not sure about the older 1100 series units).  I don’t think that we have been hearing from the owners of the other units as much.  I’m thinking that Chuck may be right in that this was related to a batch of switches.

Got my switch types wrong on these units: they are a mechanical type switch but still use a stem type button to actuate the switch.
