"Hard Boot"....??
« on: June 30, 2014, 12:59:57 PM »
I'm always reading several forums for tidbits of new information...

Anyone ever heard this one for HB units...??

And what would a "Hard Boot" be different than "Restore Defaults"....??

Quote from: xxxxxxxxxx67;2951577
A hard boot is completed by holding the power button down for 10-20 seconds. Make sure you do not let up on the button until it reboots.

You could try that

(The name has been changed to protect the innocent)...

Hmmmm…. Not sure what a “Hard Boot” is Rickie unless it is applied to my backside!  :o
I’m wondering if this has something to do with the reset function on the ONIX units which will reset everything (including waypoints).

It's being recommended by a few on more than just the ONIX...

Not that I have heard of Rickie.
I asked the CRC and QA folks as well and they have not heard of this.
Let me check with Engineering.

While reading your second link to Walleye Central, I noticed Jason Halfen is the poster recommending the Hard Boot.
I would think he is a credible source of information. This may get interesting. Here is a link to part of his site.

I would think that a hard boot is the same as on a computer.  You are shutting your unit down completely and allowing any temporary memory and capacitors that are holding a charge to discharge.  When you restart your unit you start everything from the beginning.  There might  be some info that doesn't get removed on a reset so you have bad info in memory.  I repair appliances and the first thing I tell people when there is a problem is to disconnect the power for a few minutes and the reconnect it.  May be 90% of the time the appliance reboots and works correctly. :)  It is a long shot but I always do a cold reboot when ever I run into problems.

Exactly my reasoning for posting the idea of hearing about a "hard Boot"...

Jason wouldn't post such info on a rumor...

But yet, none of the other forums I frequent have any mention whatsoever about this "Hard Boot"...

My hope is that Greg (with his contacts) can confirm (or debunk) this topic before the "possible rumor" gets out if hand ...

I'm sure Eufala is out for the holiday weekend...so let's try not to let this discussion get too much farther than here at sideimagingsoft until we get some more info from Greg next week...

Rumors of new info ...and then letdowns of opposite info can sometimes lead to animosity in some discussions....

I'm watching the forums pretty close and, so far, this idea is not so widespread as to cause problems (or elations)...

Do you have access to contact Jason directly to inquire where he got the info...??

I still can't imagine Jason openly offering info without credible approval from someone at HB...

I don’t Rickie.
I was thinking the same thing but also would have thought that I would have heard about a hard reset in our products by now.

This is why I have cautioned here at sideimagingsoft about spreading this...

Your place in the company should have you hearing of this...

So far only those 2 posts at walleye central are the only mentions of this hard boot...in any of the forums I frequent...

We will wait for your say...

I will PM Jason myself to see if he can shed some light on this topic for us..(I think he is a member here)...

Greg...(and all following this thread)...

I pm'd Jason at walleye central and here is my question (to Jason) ...with his reply...

Jason...

Would you take a minute and visit this thread to give us some insight on a couple of posts at walleye central that I happened across ...

http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/index.php?topic=7528.0#lastPost

The posts in question at walleye central are URL linked in that thread...

Rickie

That's an instruction I received directly from the factory about a week ago, while troubleshooting an ONIX issue I was having.

I do not know if it applies to the core units as well.

So it seems that this hard boot may only apply to the ONIX (ION?)...as you have already mentioned as a possibility...

Can you verify this "Hard Boot" on the ONIX (and ION?)...so we can, at least go forward with correct verified info for users...??

Will try Rickie.  We still have some folks out on vacations – they must have OD’d on BBQ (as I tried to!).

Well I guess someone recovered from the BBQ induced coma and responded to me:
That is a “No” on a Hard Reset/Reboot for our core products (300, 500, 700, 800, 700, 800, 900, 1100  series) and for the ONIX products.
No confirmation on the ION products yet but this may be where it all started from and it is a good time to remind everyone that the core products, the ONIX and ION products are all different from one another: what works for one may not work on the others.
