Your 998ci unit will not be recognized by HumminbirdPC because it is running a different programmer language, but your 788ci HD unit should have been.  What version HumminbirdPC are you running?  The current version is 4.3.8  If you are not running this version; try downloading and installing it and see if that helps.

EDIT: After trying this I have found that a 998c Si unit will in fact communicate with HumminbirdPC (version 4.3.8 ).  You still have to use an SD/SDHC memory card to update the software.]

Hi Greg

I did have the 998 and the 788 both working and was able to download waypoints add additional ones without problems then the battery went flat so the next day i used a 12v poer supply and was unable to get the PC to see either of the units when i plugged them in

Guess I missed that sometime bigboy.  I don’t know why the units would not connect now.  Could something have changed in your PC?

Tried my laptop today and same problem, I did connect the USB lead that fits into the back of he unit he wrong way round, as it fitted without problem. Could it be I have damaged it ?.. Or maybe my lead is faulty

I have not heard of this before but I guess that it is possible that the cable is bad or you may have damaged your units.
I would think that with multiple computers that damaging the ports on it would be ruled out.

Hi Greg

Spoke to the company that i brought the lead here in england from to arrange a replacement and after a couple of calls I'm told I can keep the lead and they will give me a full refund as their is a problem with software and won't be selling any leads until this problem so not sure if this will affect my units.  :-\
The lead is the USB one

The official policy is that if the unit has a card reader that the PC Connect cables should not be used and that you should use an SD/SDHC memory card to update your unit software and manage Nav Data.  I was not aware that the Linux based units would even work with HumminbirdPC until your post as they would not in the past.  Still, your units did work so something changed somewhere but I don’t know where that would be (cable, unit or PC).

Thanks Greg

They may of worked untill i upgraded the sofware to the latist version then they stoped

The 998 had to be upgraded via the card but the 788 was upgraded via the PC lead

Hello, Greg

I have the same problem with my Humminbird 598: HB PC doesn't see my unit. HB customer service asked me if "Driver Software was loaded" and I said no because no pop-up window opened on my laptop. What can I do?

Thank you!

You might try removing the HBPC program, log back into your account using a different browser, and download the HBPC program again ...

I have heard of corrupt downloads using certain browsers ...

If the new downloaded .exe application asks if you want to install Java ... Say Yes ...

It shouldn't hurt to run more than 1 version of Java on the same machine ...

Thanks! Everything works fine now. I even managed to restore one of my units (after losing power while updating) using Humminbird PC.
