898c si problems no 2d sonar, right side imaging
« on: August 01, 2016, 10:12:56 AM »
Been having problems with my 2d sonar and left side side imaging.

The 2d sonar is blank white, the rts window does nothing. What I have checked, I made sure the sonar is turned on, 200/83hrtz is set, adjusted the sensitivity which showed some of the bottom but not like it should, updated the software to version 7.6, bought a new transducer, cleaned the pins with lp no flash electrode cleaner. None of this has helped.

The down imaging and GPS work, the download images are not as crisp as before,

The left side side imaging works but the right is all black, the transducer is mounted on the right side of the motor, checked to make sure the setting were set to pick up both sides.

The head unit screen shows some odd colors to it and looks like it has pulling and pulsating colors on the graphs I posted a video on you tube under 898 c HD si.

What I have for a set up is a 898c si with a terrova I link which are either net linked together. The power is hooked up to the cranking battery, the boat is a 2016 alumacraft voyageur, it has a tachometer, on board charger radio. Still have the problems with all of the other accessories turned off. I am going to try relocating the wires to see if it is interference.

Humminbird seems to have no idea and just wants me to send it in at a price of 345 plus shipping, after 225 for a new transducer that will put me close to just buying a new unit.

Any help or suggestions would be great. I will try to get some video and images up.

Thanks Chris

If you set one of the data boxes for voltage is it above 12V?

Sounds like you have a problem with the head unit....but there are a couple of last ditch things you could try.

You can try is to reset defaults, but i doubt that is going to help with the issue you are getting.  Worth a shot though......You could also try your head unit on someone else's boat if you know someone else with a HB Si unit....  That would prove for sure it is the head unit.

I have tried restoring the defaults with no luck. I have not tried the unit on anyone else's setup.

I have not checked the voltage going in just assumed it to be good enough since the battery is new. I will check it out though.

The thing that got me was when contacting HB I talk with a person I feel had no idea about locators. Just trouble shooting with the info give. Kept telling me sound like you transducer. So I drop $230 on a new one with no luck. Now it's $345 to send it in, with no idea what is wrong. I would feel better if they would just lie to me a tell me it's a graphic card or something.

Has anyone else had an issue with their units acting this way and what was the out come.

I thought it maybe the connection pins on the back not setting proper, cause I take it off after every us.

I have never dropped it or drowned it or anything. So they just go bad over time?

The voltage on the unit is dependent upon all the connections and wire loss between the unit and the battery....not just the battery voltage itself.

The connectors can "wear" over time, but the result is usually an intermittent problem, not a constant problem.  There would have to be a very bad connection where the transducer connects into the unit to completely loose the 2D and one side of the SI.....and it would be unusual to have both 2D and SI problems.

Trying the head unit on another boat is the only other thing I can think to try to verify the problem is actually in the head unit.
