Title: Bug in 4.75 software for 1197?
Post by: mendota on March 31, 2010, 09:44:12 AM
I downloaded the 4.75 update a while back, and played with it all winter from the comfort of my living room, using recordings I had made in the fall.  No issues at all.

Last night I finally got out on the boat.  After doing a checkout run on the boat I decided to resume scanning and recording where I left off in November.

After starting the recording, all of my view updates (map, SI, 2D) slowed to an absolute crawl - perhaps a pixel every few seconds.  No useful views on any screens.

I stopped the recording, and popped out the Navionics card.  No change when I resumed recording.  Then I turned off all the downimaging views, also no effect.

I gave up at that point.  Went home and re-installed 4.70;  we'll see how that goes tonight.

Can anybody else confirm or deny my results?  Any ideas?

mendota,

What was your depth and was it locking on the bottom? Did you play back the file in Humviewer?  If it was not reading right, the ping rate could have slowed to almost nothing and slowed the screen rate.

Also, what kind of sd card are you using? and what range was your SI set to?

As Robert said.  check your settings.  I have been running 4.75 for quite a while and have not had this problem.  Could the transducer be bobbing out of the water.  what speed were you running.   chuck

Everything was working normally prior to starting the recording.  I was in anywhere from 8 to 25 feet of water, and the SI range was at 75 or 100 feet.  It definitely appeared like it had lost bottom lock, in terms of the update rate.

I am using the Sandisk Extreme III 2GB; been using it (and the 1197) for 2 complete seasons now, and 3-4 previous software updates.

I'm only moving 1-3 mph, as I am scanning for mapping purposes.

Thanks for the confirmation though; I'll post my results with 4.70, and then re-try 4.75 if the problem disappears.

We are using an 1197 about two years old so it does not appear to be new unit related.  What is the serial number of your unit?  It does appear that the upgrade to 4.75 did not go smoothly.  See what happens at 4.70 and then download a fresh 4.75 and reinstall the upgrade.  We put 4.75 on in January.   Chuck

Thanks for the reminder on re-downloading the file, just in case the first copy got corrupted somehow.

Our units sound of similar age, so I'm assuming something else is different.  I even did the "restore defaults" prior to the installation, LOL.  I did not delete my navigation data, however, and I know I am near the maximum # of tracks, as I use them to create contour lines - presently the only way to do a custom contour map on an HB unit.

I hope I don't have to delete them as well, although I noticed that all my custom line types and colors defaulted to the dratted dotted lines when I did the 4.70 install.  Oh well.

I had the same problem with my 798ci
Revereted back to original revision no change with slow scroll speed
Reinstalled 4.75 still scrolled slow
Unit has been at Humminbird since last week.
Talked to Greg Walters as I had seen several reports with this problem.
Thought there might be a fix to do at home if it were a common problem

mendota,

Do you still have the recording you made?  Please send it to me if you do.

Also, I noticed that you restored defaults before the update, but you did not mention restoring the defaults after the update.

I would revert back to the previous software version then re-install, 4.750.  Make sure you follow the steps.

Sorry, Robert, I erased them when I got home.  I won't make that mistake if it occurs again with 4.70.

No, I haven't restored defaults after the install - I have assumed the installation process did that.  But I will try that as well the next time I load 4.75.

Well, terry0540 wins the prognostication.  I went out tonight with 4.70 installed, and encountered the same problem.  Both SI and 2D sonar acquisition slowed to a crawl once I started recording.  In this case, it seemed my map screen updates were unaffected.

I did save the recordings I made, so I can forward them if desired.
Robert, let me know the preferred method.  They are under 1Mb each, I believe.

I will be deleting everything, restoring defaults, and re-installing 4.75 next.  However, the holiday weekend is upon me, and I will not be able to test it until Monday.

Any other insight is welcome - I need a fix ASAP, as this is my mapping month (minimum weed growth, no boat traffic).  The window is very short!

Same thing happened to me with my 997. not every time, but often enough to notice it.

You can send them to me via email.  Or zip them and post to this topic.

Can we start posting serial numbers with units that have a problem.  the full serial number will let us know the year, month, day, line number and sequence number.  Will help to see if there was a particular group that may be a bit different than others.  Chuck

798ci SI Combo
SERIAL # 9032502-1070

I would hold off on the serial number gathering for now.  I don't know if its going to help with the issue at hand and we will start getting as sorts of serial numbers posted with no idea of whats going on.

If we are going to do that it needs to be organised and set up in a fashion that we can make it usefull to Humminbird.

I will be anxiously awaiting the results of your repair at HB.  Please post ASAP.

Robert, I will not be able to email until Sunday pm - my files are not with me.

Assuming I have no luck with the 4.75 re-install on Monday, I may just try re-installing a much earlier version.

OK  I did not mean to gather serial number on all posts.  only those that were having this kind of problem.  OK to hold off for a while.  let think thru a way to gather s/n if it is needed.  thanks Robert.     Chuck

Maybe we could post our serial #'s in our profile, that way it would be in every post.

Louis,   that would be a great feature.   **** Robert, is this a big change or can it be done easily.   *****     Chuck

Not sure you want to broadcast your serial number to the world! Now someone could your copy serial numbers and register your unit.  Why would anyone other than HB need to know this?

I never thought of that Robert, maybe it's not such a good idea.

mendota,

Go in to the Snapshot and Recording view on you runit and hit the Menu key.  Scroll down and tell me what your Ping Rate is set to!

Robert, you called it.  I realized you were probably on to it as soon as I read your post, and managed to sneak out between Tstorms this evening.  After defaults are restored, the ping rate gets reset to 1 per second.  I set it to "auto" and the screen update rate remained normal when I began a recording.

I saw this menu item, and even selected and viewed it previously, but I saw "1" at the left extreme of the bar, and auto at the other.  I confused this menu with the GPS/trackpoint update rate, where 1/sec is the maximum.

Thanks, Robert, and all others that viewed and offered suggestions.  I figured it was something "simple".  I'm really surprised this hasn't been a more common issue for others - defaulting back to 1 ping/second seems silly.
