Title: Somebody up there doesn't want me to get an 1198
Post by: ITGEEK on March 27, 2014, 02:02:56 PM
I ordered and 1198c SI combo from "thedigitaloasis.com".  They showed on their web site that they had two in stock.
Shortly after ordering, I get an email that they are out of stock.
I call them and they said they will not get any more in, so they refund my
money.  I told them I wouldn't have ordered if it showed they did not have any in stock.  They understood and were great about my refund.

Next, I order one through Amazon.com.
Fantastic, I get it.
Bummer, it's an International version '1198cx SI' that doesn't have the CountourXD maps installed.  It was advertised incorrectly.  I sent it back yesterday.  I am awaiting my refund.

I think I am going to give up on the 1198.  I'll have to say goodbye to XM Weather and Weathersense forever. :'(

But, the good news is, if I get an 1199 I will have the fastest screen updates possible, and it would probably work better with the 360 than the 1198 would, because of the faster processor.

I am going to wait one more week before I decide.
The 1198s are getting really hard to find, and they are very pricey.
I would probably be happy with either model, but the 1198 would be
less work for me to install it.

Try Universalmania I've purchased 3 units from them with no problems, and they always had the best price.

Thanks for the info.
Yea, I tried them for an 1198, but they were sold old.

The rumor that I heard was that a TON of 1198's were flushed through the system at this years BassMasters Classic. The retailers that held out are now
in the catbird seat with supply/demand force working in their favor.

IT, I saw some units on Ebay that digital oasis said they had, its still up there!! Anyways, it looks like pricebreak-deals has 10 1198's available for around $2500.   http://www.ebay.com/itm/Humminbird-1198c-SI-HD-Color-GPS-Chartplotter-FishFinder-407990-1-New-/191085039817?pt=GPS_Devices&hash=item2c7d8e50c9 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Humminbird-1198c-SI-HD-Color-GPS-Chartplotter-FishFinder-407990-1-New-/191085039817?pt=GPS_Devices&hash=item2c7d8e50c9)

Thanks Rotus:
Yea, I saw that.
I have been looking at what's out there.
Even the 1199s are hard to get, it being the start of Spring and fishing
season.

I'm so torn between which one to get:
The 1198 has everything I need, but the 1199 is the latest and greatest.
I'm going to think about it for another week, then decide.

I hear that. The 98's seem to be more sought after at this point in time. Once the 99's are out an about the 98's will slowly become a thing if the past. Personally I think it'd be crazy to spend $2500 on a unt that is no longer in production, but this is the same guy that just bought a 798 used for his bow unit....

The discounted 1198s went fast.
The higher priced ones will take longer to sell, but I'm sure will
eventually all sell.
If I was starting from scratch, and buying new, the 1199 would be the only way I would go.  The lower prices on the 1199s are also very tempting to me.

Hey Pipe Rat,
I responded to your email.
Also,
I forgot to ask, but is your unit a U.S. domestic model with the
CountourXD maps loaded on it?
You can check the original box:
If it says '1198cx' or '407990-1M' then it's an International model.
Also, the U.S. model should say 'CountourXD maps' somewhere on the original box.
Thanks.

Well,
I finally took the plunge and updated my unit.
I bought a used unit from Pipe Rat.
It was well taken cared of and everything is working just fine.
It doesn't have a scratch on it.

I ordered a new unit twice, and was later informed they were sold out, then
had my money refunded.
I ordered what I thought was a U.S. Domestic model, and had to return it
because it was an International model.
You can't find a new U.S. Domestic model out there that is less than $2,700.
It was quite an ordeal, but now I can move forward and get a 360.

ITG

I'm happy that you were finally able to find what you were looking for.   It's been an ordeal for you.   Hope it works as expected.

Enjoy the unit Thomas and thanks for a trouble free transaction. I hope my new Onix works as well for me as the 1198 did.

I hope so too Doug.
Post up some information on this site once you
get some quality time with the Onix.
I'd be interested to hear some reviews on it.
