GPS turned off?
« on: June 04, 2016, 05:43:33 PM »
Something strange happened today, and I do not know if I did it, or if there is an issue with my Helix 5.
I went for a long boat ride, and was trying out different views etc and recording, when all of a sudden, speed went to 0 and it seemed as if the GPS was off. I know that I've seen a couple of GPS messages recently (after my firmware upgrade) and when I first start up the unit, it takes a bit before the gps is active (like any other GPS). I'm just wondering if I could have accident
Y turned it off.. And I cannot find any way to turn it back on....if I turned it off, I'd like to know how to turn it back on

The GPS connects automatically ... There is no way to shut it off ...

Did you Restore Defaults after the update ... ??

You can make the GPS Diagnostic visible under the Views tab and see if the GPS is seeing the satellites ...and also see the connection strength and some other GPS data ...

Hi,

Thx for the reponse. The update was strange since it never asked me the second yes/no question. It asked me one yes/no question and rebooted. No, I did not restore defaults after, however. Can i still do it? Is there a way to redo the update?I'll look at the GPS diagnostics info later tonight or tomorrow.

Hi,

When I hooked it up this morning (in the rain, out of the water). I turned on the unit, clicked on the startup options diagnostics, it said temperature connected, speed and gps not connected in the accessory list. I didn't leave it on long (so I don't know if it needs time to connect) because it's pouring, and I'm melting...lol, but it doesn't seem to detect the gps.

It does take some time to connect to the satellites ...even longer if the unit cannot see the sky ...

Power on the unit outside and give it a few minutes to connect ...

Thx Rickie.

I hooked it up today, and the GPS came on after a few minutes, so it seems to be ok....

That being said, something in your comment about seeing the sky makes me ask, if the water is cruddy enough (the river I was in is really dirty, but I was heading for cleaner water miles away, could it affect the GPS to the point of blocking it?

Also, when it comes to the tracks I made, I'm wondering if I could edit the info to add general GPS info (thanx to known data points).

The GPS antenna is in the head unit (not in the xducer) ...so water clarity would have no effect on the GPS antenna seeing the satellites ...

What kind of editing to Tracks are you interested in (I'm not versed in editing Tracks but I know people that are) ... ??

And I forgot to answer one of your questions ...

Restore Defaults can be (and should be) used anytime an update has been performed ...and basically anytime things just go ..well ... weird in the unit ...

Hi Rickie,

Thx for your responses. I'm just wondering if the head unit has any memory in it, since whenever I turn the sonar on after unplugging it, it seems to be returning to defaults.... can't save the visible/non visible screens etc.... but I will definitely remember that.

As for the tracks, if I know where I was, and the track I've taken, can I edit in the gps coordinates when none were saved.... or delete them when I know there are 1 or 2 0,0 coordinates before the gps kicks in??

You mention "turn the Sonar on after unplugging it" ...

The unit should be powered down with the power button before unplugging it (and you may be doing just that) ...

The unit should save your settings and views regardless (unless the unit is in Demo Simulator mode) ...

A Restore Defaults should probably be performed to possibly help with this issue ...

I'll see if I can track LittleGazzo or CamoHunter to help with your track question (I don't use Tracks except for immediate retracing fish patterns on the same day) ...

Hi,

I power down, then unplug... What I had meant was that once unplugged, and the unit plugged back in, everything starts up as if I never changed anything... I.e. Settings not kept from the time before.
I'll be trying the restore defaults shortly. Thx.

As Rickie stated, that is usually caused if the unit isn't powered off with it's own power button .... or if the unit was somehow in demo mode.

Thx for the responses. I figure it may have been in demo mode since I was doing some of this while off the boat, plugged to a battery pack. I made my changes while on the boat in normal mode after restoring defaults, so I'll see what happens.

You can disable demo mode and make sure you are in "forced simulator" mode when using the unit in the house .... in full simulator mode, the settings will be saved.

I take it that on the opening screen it is the normal mode? I.e. Normal, simulator and diagnostics....

I take it that on the opening screen it is the normal mode? I.e. Normal, simulator and diagnostics....

If the xducer is attached to the unit - the unit will boot into Normal operation if no other buttons are pressed during bootup ...

If the xducer is not attached to the unit - the unit will boot into Demo Simulator if no other buttons are pressed during bootup ...

If the xducer is not attached to the unit and Demo Simulator has been disabled under the Setup tab - the unit will boot into forced simulator if no other buttons are pressed during bootup ...

If the "Menu" button is pressed during bootup - a popup with Normal/Simulator/System Status will appear ...

As Bob mentioned ... Settings changes made in Demo Simulator will not be saved after a power cycle ...

Settings changes made in Forced Simulator will be saved after a power cycle ...
