Onix 8 questions from South Africa
« on: November 05, 2014, 05:34:26 AM »
Hi Guys

Im new to the forum so first off my name is Marc i live in Cape Town South Africa. I have a Ranger 178VS (one of the lucky few to own a Ranger in South Africa) i currently use a Humminbird 798 on the trolling motor and a 998 on the console. So here is my situation I'm in now. I would like to upgrade my unit on the console. In South Africa there is very limited access to maps on our waters. All maps need to be created by yourself. Hence I'm looking at the Onix8..... Now come the question and i hope some of you can help because i get conflicting answers from the agents as to be honest i don't know any boat that has a Onix unit on it in South Africa!!!!

1.) Can the Onix 8 be linked with a 998 or 798 ? if so can the exciting link cable work ??? (i have 998 and 798 linked)
2.) Does the Onix8 allow me to transfer google earth files onto it for waypoints and routes ? if so how ???
3.) What other programs or software / hardware do i need to purchase to utilise the benefits of Autochart Live?
4.) Do i need a Navionics Platinum card ?
5.) Does it come with Software for Autochart for you PC and is it Mac compatible ?

I hope you can help .... Thanks in advance

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums Marc.

1.) No.  The ONIX units cannot be linked to the core units like the 798 or 998.
2.) Assuming you are meaning waypoint files from Google Earth.  You would need to convert them to the *.GPX file format first to be able to do this.  The ONIX units use the *.GPS file format for Waypoints, Route and Tracks were the core units (like the 798 and 998) use the Humminbird *.HWR file format.
3.) Really none.  However, if you want to record more data than the unit will hold and/or you want to look at those maps on your computer you will need to buy either AutoChart Africa or AutoChart Pro Africa.
4.) No, not unless they have a mapping card that covers the lakes/rivers in Africa that you fish.
5.)  AutoChart/AutoChart Pro are separate programs for your computer.  AutoChart Live is built into the ONIX units.  AutoChart/AutoChart Pro is not Mac compatible without using some type of Windows emulating program.
