798 thinking about updating software need advice please
« on: June 09, 2015, 07:54:01 AM »
Hi
I have a 798 for a few years now and never had a software update.
I'm thinking about updating the software on it just hoping someone
Could help me out.
Mine has 4.73 is it to old to update, will I run into any problems because of the age.
I did buy it from the USA, but I live in Aus and it is the USA brand.
If I update it todate will I have problems with the gps, using it On the otherside of the world.

I think, that as long as you have the proper software update for a unit, it doesn't matter how old the unit is.
Make sure you back up any waypoints/tracks/routes to an SD card before you update.

For the GPS part, it may depend if you have an International unit or not.
Those units have a world map in them.
The software updates do not update the stored map, only how the unit
functions.  They may also change the GPS receive rate.  It might be possible that your GPS receiver may not be compatible with a newer update, if the receiver is too old.

I would call Customer Service and give them your unit's serial number just to make sure it's safe to update.

Keep this in mind:  You now have a working machine.  If the update goes wrong, you may have to send the unit in for repair.

Are you using the internal GPS or an external one?  I have never heard of problems with GPS compatibility after updating the software .... Greg usually checks in here once in a while, but seems to be very busy lately.

If you do update it, I wouldn't take it beyond the 6.3 version which is available in the download section on this forum.  That is probably the best release for the 798 unless you need to support the heading sensor GPS in the future.

Hi bob b
The gps is internal
My only reason for up dating would be to hopefully to see fish on the Si easier.
Do you think that the up dates will improve this?

Most of the updates during that time frame were to add things like casting rings, etc..... mostly just adding some bells and whistles ...... I doubt that an update would help the SI ..... If you don't have the HDSI transducer, switching to that would give you a little better clarity in SI ..... Other than that the only thing that will help is a bigger screen or reducing the range setting.

Cheers bob b
I think I might leave the up dates and think about a bigger screen or the hdsi transducer.
Thanks for all the information  :)
