Frustrating Day on the Water!
« on: April 26, 2009, 11:39:21 PM »
Man, I had a rough start to the day!  I backed the boat off the trailer, only to find that my steering wouldn't answer.  So now I am in the water and no way to steer my 23' Sea Pro.

Luckily a friend of mine was right there and helped me to the dock, only to find that the Teleflex cable had broken somewhere in the line.  Not sure what happened, but everything has been working great lately.  I always make sure the cable and push rod are lubed and haven't had any problems.

So, now the boat is still at the dock, just down the river from the landing.  Hopefully, I can get the right cable and get back on track.

Nothing more frustrating than to get in the water or at the landing only to find you have a problem.

Anyway, I came home and had a few beers!  So cheers, and hope everyone had a better day than I did!

Keep your spirit up Robert!
There are brighter days to come.
I know what you're talking about, because here's what happened to me last week when I finally found a solution to mount my ducer.
I drilled the first hole into the transom to get the bolts for the mount in place. As I drilled through the fiberglass I retracted the drill to get the thread cleared I couldn't believe what I saw.

The drill was wet and the thread of it stuck with rotten wood!

I started to explore from where the water in the transom plate is coming and discovered a crack in the Fiberglas right at the corner of the bottom of the transom, dammit!
I ended up drilling holes to get the water out from the plate and left them open for two days to drain and dry. On Saturday I closed the holes again, laminated the bolts in place and attached some anti fouling.
I'm still mad about this gig, because in fall I'll have to get the hole transom overhauled. Means getting both engines and Z-drives out, cutting away the transom plate and restore the whole mess with Alu Core plates. What a mess!
I thought about getting it done right away as I discovered it, but decided that this has to wait till fall. Otherwise I might go and buy fuel and matches and burn the boat.

Thanks Harald!  Better spirits will prevail.

You know what they say about a boat anyway, "Its just a hole in the water that you pour money into!"

Good luck with your transom, knowing I am not the only one with issues make it a little better! ;D ;D ;D

Frustrating, I know.  Good luck with the repairs, guys.

Thanks!  No, I haven't done any on the N Santee?  I really stay down around here and Savannah and have gotten up to Myrtle Beach because I have a few friends up that way.

Anything particular of interest?

One steering cable replaced!  Whewww!

Thats a hard job to do by yourself on such a big boat!  If you guys only knew.  I had bought a 17' cable, turned out the old one was an 18'.  I almost had to pull the engine It actually ended up fitting perfect.

So, I will be back on the water tomorrow.

Tadaaaah!!!!!!!!

Congrats Robert and guess what I did today?

SPLASHED MY BOAT!!
After three months of preparation I finally made it. Nice feeling: No leaks, no oil coming off the boat, it's still afloat, both engines are running (the left one was a bit of a headache) and the Bird works!
Now I have to figure out how to download the first pictures....
