Just installed the 998 yesterday and have a question on the transducer hinge pin play. On the transducer there is a pin at the top of the mount to allow the transducer to swing up if it hits something or you need to adjust the mount height. The Allen head bolt that holds this pin in place seems to bottom out in the pin leaving about an 1/8" play in the pin. Granted the pin needs to have play and there is a stand off washer to help accomplish this, but I think the Allen bolt is too long.
Anyone else install a new 998 and experience this?

I added a thin washer to one of my newer transducers. If you are in fresh water, any washer should be fine, but I use stainless whenever possible.

That play at the hinge point between the metal mounting bracket and the pivot arm is there by design. If it were tight the transducer would not be able to kick-up when it strikes something.

I installed a 998c last week and the transducer flips up out of the safety hinge bracket when I get over 60 MPH. I Mounted it just like the manual shows. Help

The large Si transducer does have its problems. If you put it too high you lose sonar at speeds above trolling. If you have it too low it hits things. We are finding each boat has its sweet spot for mounting the SI. I seem the see that most folks who want high speed sonar data are going to the thru-hull transducers. You might browse thru the forum and look at the various postings on speed/sonar/loss of.

I have the same play in my HDSI ducer, no worries, she reads bottom fine and I don't lose anything running wide open. It's getting correct placement on your transom.

Try bending the ‘ears’ on the metal bracket inwards to give it more retention force. Also make sure that you assembled the pivot arm (black plastic part) to the mounting bracket correctly.

Ya, the little play is built into the transducer mount but if it won't stay down when running you don't have high speed 2D. Probably don't want to add these extra installations but for me and anyone who spends most of their time in wood infested(and bass infested) water you will probably want to mount the factory provided SI transducer higher on the transom. The "stepped" transom on my Ranger would be impossible to reach the transducer to push it back down when it gets knocked up (or broke) without getting into the water or trailering the boat. I mounted the SI transducer up on a higher step that is always in the water when the boat is OFF plane. SI only works at low(idle) speeds anyway. I purchased the "Y" connector (AS SIDB Y) and a second thru-hull transducer(XP 9 20) and mounted it in the bilge area in a traditional thru-hull application. Connect the two to the unit with the "Y". Now I have high speed 2D for running and low speed SI, Down Scan, Temp and 2D when operating at below plane speed. The 998 will automatically switch between the two transducers depending on if you pick SI or 2D. My application works great. Good Luck, Neil
