Chart Speed
« on: March 12, 2012, 11:16:33 PM »
I have one question about chart speed and after looking unsuccessfully I'll ask it.  Is chart speed related to Kph, Mph or Kts?  All that I have found relates to Mph and I would like to use Kph.  Does it matter?  Should I convert the numbers?

Depark1,
If you go to the menu tab across the top of unit and select "Setup" then arrow down to "Units-Speed" you can select kph, mph, kts. I think that relates to the chart speed. Once set go to "Chart Speed" in SI view and that should have changed from mph to kph. Hope that helps

No Chart speed should match your boat speed. I usually set my chart speed on TM about 1
I set my console unit on  2 or 3 max. To change Chart speed while you are viewing SI screen hit cursor which is
the express menu arrow down to chart speed. Hope this helps.  Gary

Here's my guess. Chart speed relates to the scroll speed on the screen only and is not related to Mph or Kph.
That is, a 3 chart speed would be 3 times faster that 1; 5 would be 5 times faster than 1 etc.
In the US, matching chart speed to boat speed ( in Mph ) is a good place to start for good images.
In BC, using Kph, 3.22 Kph would equal 2 Mph , so using a chart speed of 2 should have good results.
Your boat covers the same distance at 3.22 Kph or 2 Mph.
8.05 Kph would equal 5 Mph, so using a chart speed of 5 should work.
If it were me, I would leave it in Mph only for the convenience  of 1 to 1, 2 to 2, etc. on the scroll speed.
I have run a chart speed of 10 with a boat speed of 3 to " blow up an image " ( that 20' boat on the bottom looked like an aircraft carrier ).
These are just my thoughts and I can be and have been wrong before.

I would say that newkid4si is right.
The Chart Speed menu settings were not linked or were named so in any relation to mph (or kph…).  They were just a setting of 1 to 10 that were used just as many other menus have setting of 1 to 10 (or some other number).  As it turns out: a Chart Speed menu setting of 1 works well for a boat speed of 1 mph, a setting of 2 works well at 2 mph and so on.  Set your unit to the mph Units – Speed menu setting as newkid4si stated or go ahead and calculate the approximate kph equivalent and use the Chart Speed menu setting for the equivalent mph speed.  These are just starting points as you may well like your Si sonar spread out like an aircraft carrier, or not.

chart speed has every thing to do with the size of the target on the display.  So make sure those things that should match up are set..

I agree with Chuck--" chart speed has every thing to do with the size of the target on the display.  So make sure those things that should match up are set ".
Under normal operation I try to match the boat and chart speeds. I may bump the chart speed up one notch above boat speed. If you run the chart speed to slow it will compress
the information and you may miss something. Whatever you choose, be consistent.
In my example of chart speed of 10, boat speed of 3; I already knew what was there. I just wanted to take a magnifying glass to it. Yes it distorted the crap out of the image,
but it also exposed smaller items around it.
