Helix 2D, DI, SI screenshot in simulation??'s
« on: June 26, 2016, 10:37:04 PM »
Had a chance to do some serious window shopping this weekend. This store had all brands lined up and running in simulation mode.
So previously I had asked if this pixilation in 2D was isolated to SI models and the response was yes they thought so. So is it just SI or DI models too?
How accurate is simulation mode for what I'm going to see as far as clarity on SI and DI and pixilation on 2D?
Here's what I saw.
 Helix 7 2D- perfect picture.
Helix 7 DI-  2D pixelated. DI pretty clear.
Helix 7 SI- 2D pixelated, DI not as good, SI pretty clear

Helix 9 2D- picture perfect
Helix 9 DI- 2D perfect, DI perfect
Helix 9 SI- 2D pixelated, DI okay, SI good

Helix 12- All 3 models were perfect in all screens.

So how can this be from a 7DI to a 9DI the difference?

I also found the clarity on the Garmin striker unit to be pretty impressive too but no GPS. again the 73 and 93 seemed different, not as good as Striker model. I felt the menu to be a bit of a nuisance to navigate but it might get easier after using it a while.

Lowrance Hook series was okay but there seemed to be quite a bit of lag when changing screens. Not sure what's that's all about. Also DI images didn't do much for me. Again is this the simulator at fault?

So how accurate is simulation? Is the 83/200 kHz problem only on SI models?

Funny how hard of a decision this has turned out to be. I thought being this store had all the models lined up it would make this easier. This is for in laws boat and multiple people use it. I would like to have SI but don't know if other users would know how to use it or be too complicated for them. I use the boat the most though. Other factor is there is no internet access up there, it's 5 hours away and unit needs to function flawlessly.
The old Lowrance that's been on there for 10 or so years has been swimming twice and after drying it out keeps on working. Go figure.
Thanks for any help guys and gals.

Edit; Also wanted to stay in the $600-$700 range but the stuff closer to 1K catches my attention more. And then there's the 999's out there still however I do like the Helix screen. Whew!!  The 12's were just for comparisons sake.

The 2d pixelation issue was a result of HB changing the ping sequence in the SI units to favor the SI (at the detriment of the 2d) ...

This was addressed in later software for the SI units adding "Jigging Mode" to the 2d Xpress "Menu" which allowed selecting the ping sequence back to the previous ping sequence ...

The difference you see in the 7 vs 9 would most likely be pixel density differences in the displays ...

The Simulator recording in the units would be a perfect day, with perfect water conditions, with perfect boat control, with perfect ect. ect. ect ...

Some days it all comes together ... Some days it doesn't ...

Do you recall which updates did this happened in?
Specifcially for 798ci si and 999si? And is it the same update for Helix 7 or 9?
Can you change this in simulator mode and see the difference? Jigging mode on for 2D and jigging mode off for better SI?
Do you suppose the 9 DI was in jigging mode?
Does it cycle through jigging mode on demo.

On the 798ci HD SI. would 7.60 be the correct fix for jigging mode?
I see a 7.68 does this also have fix for jigging mode?

Thanks

The 1st ping sequence change to favor SI was around 6.5xx ...

Jigging mode was added around 7.460 ...
http://www.humminbird.com/Category/Support/FAQ/7-460/

Jigging mode was added only for the core SI units because the ping sequence was never changed for the DI units nor for the basic Sonar units ...

It is unlikely Jigging mode would have any effect on the Simulator recording because the ping sequence was recorded "as is" at the time the Simulator recording was captured ...

One can think of the ping sequence in the Simulator recording as similar to taking a picture with a camera at a certain "shutter speed" ... The shutter speed cannot be changed when viewing the picture after the picture has been captured ...

(Doug V captured the Simulator recording way before the 1st ping sequence change) ...

I went to local store to look some more.  Yes you are correct in Jigging Mode doesn't seem to change anything in demo mode. I also noticed a difference in screen resolution again so there must not be consistency in this area. Demo mode must just be for being able to play with the different function tabs.
For curiosity sakes when I got home I got out my 798 and 999 for comparison.[My boat is currently torn apart for a remodel]. I don't think I've ever tried the 798 in demo and found it interesting. So I got 2 other questions after looking at my own 2 units.

1-The 798 HD has 6.25 software. How safe is it or am I going to have any problems jumping up to 7.60 or 7.68. Or am I better off to leave well enough alone, I've lived with it for 3 years now. Looks like 7.60 was 1st update for Jigging Mode in 798.

2- The 999 is new. When powering on screen seems to lag a bit with Humminbird logo showing and then a thin white line will flash horizontially across screen 1/3 of the way down. Also when powering off it does the same white line but also does like a double shutdown, screen will go black for a milli second then come back on and then completely shut off again by its self.
Is this something normal with 999's or what. software in this is 7.65.

Thanks

Downgrading from 7.68 to a lower version do not cause issue. Why because it's like installing a new OS on a PC. But the diffirent is taht you have the same hardware in all time with the Sonar so less impact having issue during install.

The only thing by downgrading is that you may losse options like auto chart reading the sd card and bug fix.

Humminbird has done several updates that affect both 2D and imaging performance.....The ping sequence, ping timing, and the way the signal is processed by the software will affect the imaging as well as the hardware.
**Looking for the one that makes it all worthwhile**

This does not sound normal ... If the unit will power up and boot completely - try Restore Defaults and see if anything changes ...

I did call HB the other day while I was on the road.  Lady I talked said it sounded weird and put me on hold. She came back after a while and said this is normal and the line shows up in different spots on different fishfinders.  I'm going to do a little more investigating over the weekend and go from there.

The white line flash.^
