598ci si Help sd card recording
« on: June 08, 2013, 05:35:06 PM »
Maybe this post has been started elsewhere but did not find it.

How the heck do you record images on this thing?  I saved some waypoints and wanted to download them to a sd card but could not find a feature to it. >:(

I am using an Sandisk 8g Ultra 30m sd card?

Have you turned the Screen Snapshot on?
To do this- menu button twice, tab to Accessories, down to Screen Snapshot, cursor button left/right to turn on.
Default is off.

Format your sd card before you use it, you may want to use humminbirdpc to format your sd card. To transfer data from your unit to sd card, use the "export all nav data" command, then you can view data on your computer. Humminbirdpc is only for waypoint management, to view recordings you need 3rd party software, hummviewer is completely free. You can still view snapshots on your computer without any software.

To make a screen snapshot, turn on this feature like Mike described above.  Now when you press the MARK button the unit will save a waypoint to the unit’s internal memory and also save a *.png image file to the memory card you have installed.

To export waypoints on your 598ci HD Si unit:
 - Press the MENU button twice and go to the “Waypoints, Routes, tracks” menu.
 - Open this menu by using the Right Arrow.
 - Scroll up to “Options” and open it using the Right Arrow.
 - Select “Select All and…” and use the Right Arrow to open this submenu.
 - Select “Export” and use the Right Arrow to activate this menu.

I really want to thank you guys, and eveyone else that replies with all the help to our newby type questions. I learn so much.
I am having some simular (human) problems getting my screen shots and track recording uploaded to my memory card- to view on humviewer. I have
successfully done it twice, but then right when I think I am getting the hang of it- I do what I did friday. I went to a lake, started recording, and when I finished fishing I saved it- got home and the track didnt show up on my ssd card. What ever sequence of things I am doing, I am doing wrong hahah. Any suggestions?

Thanks Guys!

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums Slant 8.

When you say “track” you are meaning a Sonar Recording correct?
Try fully formatting your memory card using HumminbirdPC and try recording again.  You can do this with the boat on the trailer – it may not produce anything that you can use but it will prove that the unit is recording to the memory card.

Greg, Thanks for the quick reply! I made a folder on my PC and backed up my data from card first (just now), then opened Humminbird PC but I do not see a place or option to format my card.
Any ideas?

Try it again Slant8 but this time select the SD card icon and right click to see the Format option.  When I do this on my work PC it buries the window to do this behind everything else I have open and so I have to minimize all the programs I have running to find it.  Be sure to uncheck the Quick Format option.

"I went to a lake, started recording, and when I finished fishing I saved it- got home and the track didn't show up "

You didn't by any chance make the error of not stopping the recording?
There are two parts --- Start recording and Stop recording.
If you don't stop the recording at a reasonable length of time, HumViewer will take a long time or never open it.
I have found about 20 minutes for each record time works for me.

I went to the lake last night, again tried to really pay attention to what I did on my HB. I started recording. However,
got rapped into fishing and forgot to stop after twenty mins or so like you suggested! When I returned to ramp, I cant remember if I hit
STOP or SAVE. I am such a cluts!
So Just now I opened Humminbird PC and Google earth, my track is there! I didn't save any way points last night
but had I marked some I know they'd been there too. BUT, here is the kicker, I opened Humviewer and JUST as you described-
It is almost like it is 'hung up' trying to open the recording file. I know now that I am 100% the cause of my problems hahaha
My lessons learned from you guys;
1) Start recording (then Stop recording after 20 or so minutes)
(make several 'small' clips instead of a 3 hour or so movie)
2) When I return to ramp, make sure to press STOP before SAVE.
3) Export all my track and Nav data

I may just have to go again this evening to try it again :)

Any tips I am leaving out regarding recording?

Thanks!

Set sonar to 200kHz only under the Sonar tab...(when recording)...

The additional 83kHz info is not really needed for the recording and it just makes the file size bigger...

Any fish that are missed by not using the wider 83kHz 60° cone will still show up in the SI on the recording...
