Title: Networking my 998 to my 858
Post by: racing2fast on October 03, 2013, 02:35:41 PM
Wondering how I can network my 998 at my console to my 858 at the bow?  Do I just attach the ethernet between both units?  Also, do both units have to have the same firmware version?  Example... my 998 came with version 6.62 from the factory.  My 858 came with version 6.61 from the factory.  Can I just link them together or do they have to have the same "firmware version"

Also, I have heard that the earlier version of software the 6.490 seem to work better and have a better image quality over the 6.62.  Can I downgrade my current unit to an older version since it came from the factory with a newer version?

Hope this is posted in the right forum....  just signed up last night.

Thanks in advance ;D

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums racing2fast.

All you should need is an Ethernet Connection Cable.  These come in a variety of lengths and the length will be a part of the part number (did that make sense?): Example an AS-EC-2E is a two foot Ethernet Connection cable while an AS-EC-20E is a twenty foot Ethernet Connection cable.  They come in 2, 10, 15, 20 and 30 foot lengths. http://store.humminbird.com/category/629916/Ethernet (http://store.humminbird.com/category/629916/Ethernet)

Both units do not have to have the same software version but do have to be running at least software version 5.410.  However with the 6.680 software version came the following message:
“These software updates draw a line in the sand.  Once a user updates one or more of their units to software version 6.640 or 6.680 they must update all of the other Ethernet networked units to the same release.   If they try to use one unit with software version 6.680 and another unit on the same network that might be at 6.610 or lower these models will no longer talk to each other until the unit that is at 6.610 or lower has been updated to the newest release of 6.640 or 6.680.   If the units are not networked, this issue is irrelevant.  But we always recommend that the user update with the latest code.”.  So your 858 being at software version 6.620 and your 998 being at software version 6.490 should work fine when connected with an Ethernet cable.

If you load an older version into your units than what it was originally produced with you run the risk of the unit not working at all.  It would have to be returned to the factory to have the memory chip replaced and this would not be covered under the warranty.
