Hi,
I've been doing some testing on the 5.500 release for my 998c and your post caught my eye.  For my testing I have (again for my 998c) four revisions (4.970, 5.210, 5.410, and 5.500) across two MMC/SD chips looking at a problem that I think I'm having with the "Chip Select" box - Chart drop down Menu - when one of the mapping chips installed is a Lake Master. Anyway, I'm seeing the same thing on my 998c SI screen when I'm changing colors BUT I'm sitting in the garage (and not on the water). Is your boat out of the water when you’re looking at your SI color issue? I see a slight backlight change when I switch between Amber 1 and Amber2. I went back to 4.970 and I observed the same backlighting scenario. I think you’re OK. If you’re seeing this SI color issue in the water, ignore all that I have said and I'll go away quietly! ::)

Take care,
Roger

This is what I am afraid of...something not right about the new update.  I did talk with the Humminbird folks today and they said the new updated program should download and work fine.  Seeing your post makes me want to hold off until I see more.  My unit is working great and I do not want to cause it any harm.  Please, anyone who has or thinking about this new update, give your thoughts.  Call HUmminbird also and see what they say.  Good luck and keep them coming.

YEA, I`AM SITTING IN THE GARAGE AND TRYING THIS OUT IN SIMULATION MODE AND NORMAL OPERATION. SIMULATION MODE WORKS GREAT. SO FAR THIS COLOR PALLET PROBLEM IS THE ONLY THING I`VE FOUND.

Just for grins......try setting a bucket of water under the transducer and lower the ducer into the bucket.  Or what ever it takes to make the transducer wet.
See what happens then...

For some unknown reasons...it seems several people have trouble downloading the updated softwares to the S I units.  Then, to make matters worse, is it the software having trouble or the downloading is not being done correctly.  The folks at Humminbird Tech told me today that they newest 5.500 updated software is fine and should not have any trouble.  I am not going to update mine yet.  What exactly does the new 5.500 software update do and would it be worth taking a chance.  I am confused ??

Calli

I down loaded and installed 5.500 update without any problems.  When installing I still follow the old practice of restoring defaults (only takes a few minutes to put everything back to my settings.  I keep a memo of changes so I do not overlook anything.

Gary, Dont know, was thinking of asking the questions like you are. There has to be something common.
I know we have had interlink compatabilty issues and also standalone code issues.
I dont think HB writes the code. My belief is a vendor is contracted..
So not sure how much quality testing goes into this. Or is interlink is also tested..It does seems that a lot of issues with updates are occuring..
What is pondering is some work and some dont.  Same code same units..

OK for the guys that are having problems lets see if we can post some details of the units and what else might be connected if any.

Thanks Gary....

unit 1197c si  no add-ons  not inter linked with any other unit. have updated unit once before with no problems. watched video on utube before attempting down load. restored defaults once before and after download. I have contacted humminbird and they suggested restoring defaults and restarting. Tried that and no help.

My unit details are  1197/ 898 Ethernet joined nothing else. And l still have yet to try it on the water with this new update. As l said before we may /may not have a problem .The only background color is blue but when l do change the color from blue to say brown l get a black background and the sonar display is brown its very hard to see because the unit is not in the water And what l am seeing is interfearance lines.... indiana 520 maybe try this turn on your trolling .motor... look at the screen do you see any lines ?Change the color tab try again You wont see much but enough to see if the color changes

You folks iron out the problem or find out what is going on.  I don't think the update will do me any good either way so I'm not touching my unit right now.  Fish on!!

My 1197 and 998 are connected by Ethernet.  They were both updated yesterday and seem to work flawlessly.  Prior to the update the down/chart combo view did not work and immediately upon turning unit on screen would flash until you hit view or exit several times.  Problem resolved.  Normal si color palate.

The software updates for these units are really a  moving target.
Each update usually fixes something important, but it also could possibly mess up something that used to work.  These units are doing a lot of things, and the programming for them I'm sure is very complex.
My attitude is that I'm better off doing the update because Humminbird has put it out there for one or more important reasons.  Some reasons I'm sure they won't ever tell us.

I have an 1197c SI with no interlink and my 5.500 update worked OK.
But, I did not try looking at the SI color palette yet.

When in doubt, my 2 cents says to go ahead and do the update.
Whatever they screw up on this one, it will probably be fixed in the next one. :)
If you are afraid, then keep a copy of the previous update so you can always go back.  This site has copies of older updates.

Anytime you contact HB for a unit problem, the first thing they're going to ask you is if you are running the most recent software, so it's best to keep the software  up to date.

I understand where you are coming from Geek....but at some point in time they need to start sending quality code. Each time we dont need a new problem while fixing the old one.
Yesd we can go back in code level but why??????
This stuff should work better than it does...
HB will have to get over it as there is no reason to upgrade code if you are not having problems or do not need a new enhancement..

JUST GOT BACK FROM THE LAKE AND EVERYTHING WORKED PROPERLY. SO AS FAR AS I CAN TELL THE 5.500 UPDATE IS OK. THE COLOR PALLET FOR SI IN SIMULATION MODE STILL DOESN`T WORK OTHER THAN BLUE. BUT SO WHAT.

Indy.... Have not considered that in a while.  I will check my 1197 and see what it does.  However I have not updated to 5.5 as yet.  So this may be apples and oranges until I upgrade.  I will see anyway..
At least is shows  you are trying out your unit...

One of the Techs here tested several units with the 5.500 software in the normal operating mode and the Simulator mode.  All had the multiple Si sonar color palettes.

OK.  What are we saying here??????...That 5.5 works....or 5.5 works in some and not others......or.....? I am a bit confused as to the compatability of the code to a unit...and selective connections to other units or applications...

Hey Chuck, consider this.
Let's say that Humminbird found out that their algorithm/code to compute depth was off by 3 feet.
Do you think they are going to tell the public that?
Heck no.

They'll just fix it in the next upgrade and be quiet about it.
That's why I always install the newest software updates.
We just don't know for sure what it fixed, but I go on faith that my unit will be better because of the update.

ITGeek......We expect that but as you can see by the posts here that the new code does not always work....code does get shipped with defect...I hope not by choice but by error in testing.
What some of the folks here are an experience in code that does not work for them because of...???????.....meaning that it was not tested fully before shipping.
We all know that new code is suspect today in any capacity be it sonar, computer, tv.....anything that employees an internal processor...
So the caution is dont always be the first to install. If a forum has posting of upgrade problems dont install until you see satisfactory acceptance of the code.
blind install could mean you get impaced by a defect.
I also maintain that quality control should produce error free code but it doesnt. So lets go with the caution view...
As to why code is updated I think the user has the right to know what the changes are.

I  had the new update on the water and it worked flawlessly.

But, when trying to look at a sonar recording, it seems the playback is really slow.  I tried all 3 of the forward playback speeds and they are all slower than normal.

Yep...I felt the playback speed did not have enough speed control.  One of the reason for using an external viewer. I wonder if this may have to do with the sd card size or type of manufacture.
I have not tried a new extreme card.  What card do you use..??

I have a Sandisk Extreme III.
I think the playback speeds were OK in previous software versions.

I just noticed after updating to 5.500, it seemed like it took forever for anything on any screen to move.  Going to the faster playback speeds didn't seem to make any difference at all.

My cpu was replaced recently and everything else is working perfectly.
Must be a software glitch.

I've tried the Humviewer.
The SI images are great but the 2-D don't look so good.

Do you know of a better viewer for 2-D?
Thanks in advance.

Yep, I was afraid you were going to say you had the bigger and newer card.  HMMMMM...it is probably the code.
Or you asking for 2D or DI.
Something I tried that works somewhat is the converter to the lowrance viewer and with a bit of eyeball adjustment it seems to show a pretty good 2D image...

I agree....I put the 5.5 on last night but was very careful to restore defaults, turn unit on, insert card and then wait patiently until the green all ok screen came up.
So far so good.
Unless you are in a big hurry I would wait until all the posts and issues have been remedied.
We put the update on just to see if there were any concerns. We have a backup unit just in case. And an airplane so if we need plant assistance we can just fly down...
Now we dont have any interlink or ethernet items so just the base unit.

Chuck

Since you lost the interlink and ethernet with the latest update have you tried reinstalling the previous update to see if they have been restored (just curious)?

I updated my 898 C SI to 5.5 and the sonar screen is different than it was and the recording and play back was slow, jerky and the screen has a flicker. I put the 5.210 back in and all worked fine. So there is something wrong with 5.5 upgrade.

According to this forum there is something wrong.
It seems that different guys have different problems, and then again some experience the same.
We put 5.5 on yesterday and now need to do a water check out.  So far the static checkout on the bench is working.
Playback seems slow.
I will watch for the recording speed on the water.

Chuck it's got me thinking are the people having trouble with updates putting there updates in while there unit
is hooked up on the boat with the transducer, weather , etc. or are they doing there update on a bench like i do with nothing else hooked up to the head but a power supply.Plus I always take my SD cards out before I update. Gary

Gary, I just dont know. some of it may be just as you said, but for others it may be a compatability issue between units..Not sure the code was tested out completely..

Chuck i was trying to simulate 520 issue the only way i can make the screen stay blue in simulation
mode on side imaging is to go menu, menu go to sonar curser down to color and it won't change
exit out. Screen still on SI hit menu cursor down to color walla they ALL work. Gary

Gary,
I am not understanding your button sequence to get this to happen.  Could you explain it better, step by step please.  As read: if you press the MENU button twice than it puts you into the main menu system.  There are no menus to change the Si Colors in the main menu system - this is under the X-Press menus for the Si sonar.

Greg just like I stated I was trying to help 520 out with his new update or whatever and i was telling Sonar the only way I could get my 1198 to stay on blue was from the sonar menu not the menu from SI Greg I put that out there for 520 I
don't know where or what he was doing or what the unit was on . If you read what I wrote you can see I gave him
two different examples . Just trying to help.  Gary

Hi guys, My team is new to this forum so bare with me. I notice that there have been a lot of download issues with the 5.5 version in the previous replies. We have a 1197 and love it. I was told about the update so I downloaded it to my SD card but have not installed it on the unit yet. I'll have to say...I'm a little nervous after reading all these post. Have the issues been resolved yet? I'll believe I will just hold off for a while. Thanks
Lt. Ellis
