I used to defend HB on these type of issues.....but don't anymore....There are getting to be TOO many things they aren't listening to us about.

I'm not ready to jump ship, but not happy with their lack of response to a number of issues.....and it would be easier to convince me if someone else gets their act together on the SI.

That's a part of it too there Bob, I heard one guys said he was going to Garmin, and I know they have good GPS - heck they all do, One other guy I know online asked another Garmin owner about his Sonar & he started with how good the GPS was....lol  Yeah- OK.     ::)
The blue connector brand I used to use has got some really good DI but the SI blows, IMO you have to tune a transceiver for one of the other. HB is still the best SI out there IMO, even IF optimized for 455KHz (B/C of the 360??) and the "SpotLight is largely a joke, as I see them for sale all the time.
Raymarine & Garmin are both pretty expensive and the "after failure - out of warranty" experience is not a conversation you or I want to have- as I've talked with a few owners.
One user on that Canadian site said they are getting Garmin's, I can almost hear a new hater - B/C this guys cries about how bad his 1198's are (seems) all the time. Hey if they're that bad, sell me one for $500 then!
 >:D
NONE of these companies can rest on their laurels & nobody can stay #1 for a long time - the competition has forced HB to do some things they may have made some poor choices on, in order to stay competitive and attract new customers.
I'm not sure how good the Helix5's will be (imported too??) - but you can bet your bottom dollar the other companies are going to take a kick in the groin with sales over these units.
You've probably seen pics online, but most guys will pounce on a "baby" 999/899 for under $500.
My 798 cost quite a bit more than that and I bought it @ the EOL,  year end close out price.
 :o

I think you pretty much nailed it swf1960.......I am not going to shoot myself in the foot going to somebody else just because I am ticked off at HB about a few things......but I am also not going to upgrade.....Should be able to keep my 1197 and 1198 going for quite a while yet.....and just bit the bullet staying on the older software......
Not what I would like to do though.  I just retired and wanted to get set up with the Onix and 360....Oh well, I like the ones I have now with the software I am running.

Even though I cannot network in my 798 - and the screen is small for these old tired eyes , it still gives the best 2D of the three.
I may get a switch so I can use it on the TM - and when it fails I will look long and hard at a Helix 5, 859ciHD  or another brand of stand alone.
I realize HB can;t be everything to everyone, but some of the S/W complaints not being addressed or getting worse in favor of more options the everyday user may not want or need goes against all I was shown by Greg years ago.
Am I a fan?
SURE.
Will I turn hater??
Unlikely.
Will HB listen to the little person, instead of marketing peeps & higher-ups?? I hope more than they do now - or maybe those higher-ups should get online instead of sending someone else  deemed"less important" to the front lines for a taste of C/S......  ;)

Not sure if anybody is interested at this point but you can disable SI readouts on the new Helix.  This is very helpful given its reduced size compared to other units.  It has a much better display than the other 5" series because of the wide format.  I plan to use it for SI view only alongside another standard plotter/FF.

I'm interested.  ;)  So with the Helix, you can fill the screen with nothing but SI display?  If so that's a big advantage over the 398ci si and others.

I complained about the huge ReadOuts on my 999 as well.  The one help I received was about the feature allowing me to completely turn the ReadOut display off when using SI.  This certainly makes viewing SI easier because the screen is totally dedicated to the SI output.  Why we don't have similar controls on other screens baffles me.

It's probably a really huge code re-write, and I don't know why ~ except for maybe processing power you can't have translucent readouts with SI like on some views.

This is a sunken boat off my 998c HDSI - same thing on the Helix SI screens.

Last week on my 899ci HDSI before the ice came.

Yes, there is a menu option in for "SI Readouts"  If you turn it off all the boxes disappear and it goes full width but only in full screen SI mode.  You get the readouts in other views.  You may need to change the settings to advanced mode and update your SW to get the option on older units.
