Fish ID
« on: July 02, 2013, 06:51:33 PM »
I recently purchased a 998c unit brand new, once I got it home I started to install it then did the updates and noticed that my right side SD card slot was not working so I returned the unit to the store I bought it from and they replaced the unit and the box it came in with a "new" one. So now I get it all hooked up and head to lake St Clair for the long weekend I tweak it for a bit and decided I much rather be fishing then playing with my graph because I can only get to St Clair once a year and its a awesome fishery but I do on the occasion take a slow roll around the lake to see if I can make anything or see anything well I notice that the 998 is not showing any fish when my 797 is so I turn on Fish ID and I only see orange fish no blue and even in simulation mode it only shows orange.

I have gone through the settings changing everything and resetting everything but still not joy. If I am understanding it correctly the blue fish would be 200khz and orange are 83khz so I would suspect I have a bad ducer and seeing as it is the original that came with the defective unit I am probably right but would it not show up on the SIM mode even with a bad transducer?

When the unit is running in the simulator mode it I not using the transducer.  So a “bad” transducer would not be shown then.

Orange Fish ID symbols are from the 200kHz sonar.
Blue Fish ID symbols are from the 83kHz sonar.

Check your 998 unit and see what the Beam Select menu is set to.  If it is set to the 200kHz setting, the unit will only display Fish ID Symbols for the 200kHz (Orange Fish ID Symbols).  Set it to 200/83kHz to display both or switch to the Split Sonar View that shows the 83kHz and 200kHz sonar side-by-side.

Thanks for replying I do have it set to 200/83 and I have changed it to 83 and  200 only and still nothing .. I was messing with the settings trying to get it to show something ..

I'll go to the lake this weekend and bring tools to change out the ducer and see if that works ..

stumps, make sure that the other unit is not on when you are testing this.  It could be that the unit is doing some sort of auto-filtering of the sonar because it is thinking that it is some sort of interference.

ok I must have lied about trying the 83 I just tried it in Sim mode and I get nothing but a blank screen on any of the screens other then maps or side/down imaging. I see the split screens and all but no data is scrolling on them. I really do appreciate the help you are giving me Greg thanks again..

I do understand that the transducer is not being used while in sim mode I was just speculating that it was a Friday unit and everything in the box would be bad.

I didn't realize that Doug doesn't use 83khz and that when he recorded the demo for the 998 unit it was off. so that explains why I can't see it in demo mode, but I still can't get it to work on the water.

I did try with the front 797 off (actually it was disconnected) this past weekend and I am in the midst of rerouting the power wires.

stumps,
If the 200kHz works while on the water but the 83kHz does not – that means that there is a problem in the 83kHz transmitter/receiver of your 998c Si unit.  Contact the Humminbird Customer Resource folks about getting it fixed.

well my fishing season is coming to a close so I decided to see about resolving my issues with my 998 and 797, I think I have sorted out my problems with my 797 RFI issues but the Humminbird C/S told my my 998 is a straight up software issue and I'll have to wait for new software to see if it includes a fix, Has anybody else have issues with 83khz not working? I've changed software back to old versions and updated to the latest and no change and just don't see it being a software issue.

So I sent it in and the tech replaced the card reader by mistake but insisted it was defective, shipped it back to me and none of the accessories were connected ( GPS, weather sense) so I sent it back and he told me it was a transistor that was blown, kinda implying that I had broke it, must have been during shipping I guess because the only thing I did was plug it in like I always do.

I take it out this weekend and I still have no 83khz even raw data there is no fish and now my GPS randomly disconnects and I have to reboot it. I am so frustrated right now I spent all this money and I have a test box for a HB repair tech, I have a pretty good feeling that this is going to end poorly for me...... Well I guess it has ended poorly I am not only out the $1500 plus all the accessories(probably another $500)   I paid for this unit but now I am over $200 in shipping charges but hey it shows water temp I guess I get something out of the deal.

not sure what to do with it I know I can't sell it, that wouldn't be right and I am pretty sure HB wont do anything except tell me to enjoy my 998 as broken as it is.

stumps,
The Fish ID Symbols not showing up when using the 83kHz sonar is a known software issue.  However, the 83kHz not showing anything is not.  That is a problem in the unit – not the transducer.  I say this because the same element and connections inside of the transducer that are used for the 200kHz 2D sonar are used for the 83kHz 2D sonar.  The difference being that there is different circuitry being used for the 200kHz versus 83kHz sonar inside of the unit.

You should call the Humminbird Customer resource Center folks back and insist that they send you a prepaid shipping label since the unit has been returned multiple times and still has the original problem since last year at this time. 1-800-633-1468

Well that ended poorly...

Thank you Greg for all your help in this matter, I really do appreciate it.

I did call Humminbird today and I was given two options
1) send it to another repair facility. which will cost me probably another couple of hundred and most likely a couple more pounds of solder to the already Frankenstein Bird.
2) send it Eufaula, AL which I would prefer but at a cost of probably somewhere in the $500 range most likely more.

At this time I can't justify spending any more money on this unit and think I will just junk it or donate it to some software engineer, as I just don't see any other way of fixing this.
I think i will just save up and buy a new one, that is not so broken. on a positive note I didn't buy the Tararova link I was looking at and I didn't totally figure out what I needed for networking.

Thanks again Greg.
