997C NVB SI update issues through humminbirdPC
« on: November 10, 2010, 07:52:17 PM »
Hi Guys
I'm glad i found this forum! I am new here and it's quite obvious that you guys know exactly whats going on with HB unit.
Thank you for taking the time to get this up & running and keeping it running.

Ok I updated my 997c SI nvb through the humminbirdPC program to the 4.950. It looked like everything went well until it tried to restart. Then the start screen showed and let out a constant ringing with the screen flickering. It wouldn't shut off so I unplugged the power cable and tried restarting it. Then I got a partial fuzzy screen when i tried starting it. Oh I did restore defaults before updating it as recommended. After letting it sit for a while I did get it to start up again but I couldn't get it to download the waypoints into HBPC. Also when i exited demo mode and looked through the options it would lock up.
After finding this forum I saw that the 4.950 update has a bug in it so I regressed the firmware to the 4.750 and am getting the same thing again when i try to start it up. Partial fuzzy screen. again I let it sit for a while and it's working. At least starting up.
I still can't get it to download the waypoints into humminbird PC like I assume you should be able to. All I get is the downloading window and nothing happens. I've spent hours trying to get this thing to work and it's aggravating the snot out of me!
Is there any work around or a step that I'm missing?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated
Thanks!

Hello heimskr and welcome to the forum,

To me it sounds like your first update went ape in one way or the other.

I wrote how to get a unit restored here:

http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/index.php?topic=661.msg2961#msg2961

Maybe you should try to get the unit updated again through the bootsstrap mode.

Hope this helps!

Good luck and best regards from Germany

Harry

You also might want to download a fresh copy of the update from this site just in case that yours is corrupted.

Ok I went through the whole bootstrap process and everything seems to be fine except 1 problem.

Humminbird PC still wont download any of the waypoints that are on my machine.

The only thing I get is the downloading screen with nothing happening.
I am using windows 7 pro but running humminbirdPC in compatibility mode.

Not sure what else I can do at this point. Thanks for the bootstrap tut by the way!

Scratch that! I figured everything out

So now I just have to play around with HBPC to figure out everything.

Thanks

What have you figured out and what still does not work Heimskr?

Have you tried using the Export All Nav data menu and sending the waypoint data to an SD memory card?  Try that and see if it will pull up in HumminbirdPC.  I don’t know if this is a problem with the waypoint data getting corrupted during one of the updates you performed or a problem with using HumminbirdPC on a Windows 7 machine.  Does HumminbirdPC even show the 997 unit as connected?

Hi Greg,

I got everything figured out. The 997 exported the way points to an sd card fine and they imported just fine into HBPC.

Reinstalling the firmware via the bootstrap mode seems to have worked and fixed everything. I'm definitely going to be VERY careful on updates in the future though. Thought I lost all my way points there for a minute!   :'(

Now I just have to figure out what humminbird PC does so I can implement everything I learned at a GPS seminar recently and I should be golden.

trying to figure out how to create a route from WP's to define a breakline or depth contours and use that instead of just waypoints and things of that nature

Should be interesting

Thanks again!

I don't want to downplay any updates that HB puts out because I know they are trying to improve their product...but....

I never install a new update until I watch the forums for SEVERAL months to see the problems that arise from the updates.....

Sometimes the update is just not worth the possibility of the problems it may create...IMO

I like to keep everything updated I think HB doe's a great job building an updating there units.
I personally think the update problems are operator error and or there equipment feeding the HB
IE-  battery, wires, etc.     Gary
