Transom Install - One more new guys question... :)
« on: April 03, 2011, 11:26:57 PM »
Hello friends!

I am a new owner of my first Humminbird (or any SI unit) 1198c. Of course, I have a tournament this coming weekend and am trying to get things installed.

I went to put the transducer on my little ol' Javelin boat (no jack plate) and found there is a little gap for the SI transducer to see through past the motor, but I suspect it to be a bit slim. (See photos. The first half are with the motor at almost level, the second half are with it trimmed all the way low.)

If you all-knowing-greatly-informed-folks were me, would you chance it and mount it there at the normal back of the boat location and try to see how it performs, or would you mount it in the next down step next to the drain plug and then be exposed to a bit more stumps and such?

And while we are at it...the face of that next vertical step is not completely flat nor is it completely vertical like the regular back of the boat transom mounting place, so if I decide to  mount the transducer on the step down surface, will I be able to adjust for the non-flat-ness and adjust the transducer accordingly?

(I have not broken out all the hardware and such as I saw the Humminbird disclaimer about replacing a transducer with another one if this plan does not work....I am waiting to see if this works...)

Once again, thank you in advance for your two cents on this!

Chris

Chris,
Since the transducer is already on the boat I would just go ahead and test what you have.  It does look like you will have to trim the motor up to get good left side Si readings as the motor is going to block some of the that Si sonar.

Not sure what you are meaning by this part:
“that next vertical step is not completely flat”
If the transducer is not pointing straight forwards that any of your Si sonar will be skewed as well.  If it is not straight vertical; you can adjust for most of the with the transducer.

It looks like it is to high up and the transducer has a upward tilt. It will barely be in the water. If you can I would put the tranducer as close to the bottom of the boat as you can and a slight downward tilt. I read bottom at 30mph with the slight down tilt.
Next time you think you are perfect try walking on water

Chris you will be able to use the transom your on now just bump it down 3 inches and make sure when
you come in to a place to scan don't trim motor all the way in keep motor trimmed up when scanning
The only issue I see is interference from motor support reflected while side imaging. The HD tranducer
needs headroom and sideroom. Gary

Guys,my apologies, the transducer was being held by someone's hand in the pictures. It was not mounted yet.

But...good news! I did mount it exactly where it shows in the pics (but horizontally I adjusted it right) and it works beautifully! Even with the motor trimmed all the way down like in the second half of the photos, which astounded me as it seems to be obstructed. But it works!

And...I won 5th in a tournament which puts me in third place for the year thanks to my new 1198!

Thanks for all the input, fellows!

Chris
