Title: 898 SI Software Update
Post by: RANGER94 on May 04, 2010, 09:39:33 PM
Just installed new 898 SI unit on my bass boat and I am having a few problems updating the software.  I downloaded the new software onto an SD card and powered the unit up.  I received a couple promts and then my screen froze up.  I had to disconnect power to shut the unit off.  Now whenever I power the unit up it is still stuck on the same screen and the unit will  not shutoff.  HELP!

ranger94,

Welcome to the forum.  Sorry to hear you are having some issues.  Did you restore the defaults before inserting the SD card?

Download a fresh copy of the update for your unit from Humminbird on to the SD card.  Try to power up with the SD card in the unit and see if will try to do the update.  If that doesn't work, turn it on and stick the SD card in and see if it will try that way.

If all else fails, you can get the PC Connect cable and restore thru the bootstrap mode.  Let me know on the first ones and then we will get into how to do the bootstrap.

The 898 I received last week had the newest version already installed. 4.880 and it's the only one listed in the download section. Just curious but Ranger94, what was your old version?

I have tried both of your suggestions about loading the SD card and they did not fix the problem.  I did not restore the default settings before inserting the SD card because I assumed since the unit was new no factory settings have been changed.  I think that might be where I messed up.  I am pretty sure after review that I already had the newest version of the software already installed.  My unit is still stuck on the load screen so I guess we can explore some other possible options.  Thank you guys for your help!

I hate to say it ranger, but it looks like as if you have locked up your unit  :(.

Here's a way to get it back running:

I hope this helps and good luck

Hi guys,

I read on one of the other chatboards the Humminbird PC will not work on the new 800 and 900 series boxes because they changed the Operating system (went to Linux from an old inhouse package). I tried to get the Bootstrap sequence to start on my 998c and the "View/Power On" sequence would not work. Hopefully there will be some sequence defined when Humminbird PC is updated. According to  "Humminbird Greg", Humminbird PC will have to be re-written to support those new units (no estimate date was given).

That probably explains why those new units are so much faster doing map screen updates (running the Lakemaster and Navionics Platinum chips) than the rest of the product line.

Take care,
Roger

:o Ooops, that's new to me.
I hope Greg will comment on this.

You are correct, HB PC is not going to work for now!  Your best bet is going to be to ship it to HB.  Depending on where you are the shipping is pretty good, but you can pay a little extra for 2nd or 3rd day if needed.

Yup.  Roger and Robert are correct: no HumminbirdPC without a new version.  No news on when that will happen that I have heard.
