Title: Replacment transducer advice
Post by: MichBill on January 17, 2012, 03:49:49 PM
I have purchased a new boat and am going to keep my 798 c SI, however the new owner wants to keep the transducer that is mounted in the old boat.

Since I can go either way, would you experts recommend just replacing it with a stock transom mount, or installing a through hull transducer?

Thanks for any help.

Mitch, it all depends on the boat hull type.
Can you give us a description of your vessel...
You might try looking thru the picture gallery at other installs and also searching thru the forum for similar posts..
Depending on the transducer type it can have a hugh effect on the sonar display is the placement is not right...

MichBill,
Are you talking about a true Thru-Hull transducer here (the kind that get mounted through a hole in the bottom of the hull)?

If you are talking about an inside-the-hull mounted transducer then this is not an option with the Si sonar.

The new boat is a bayliner bowrider (20 feet) with a 3L inboard outboard.

I was referring to the through hull transducer that is mounted through the hull with the transducer on the outside bottom of the boat.

If that is a trailered boat you may have problems with a Thru-Hull transducer: they can get damaged while loading and unloading the boat if it is mounted under the hull.  I would just use the transom mounted transducer as I don’t like to put big holes in the hull of a boat.  Maybe someone else has the same boat and can comment on where they have their Si transducer mounted.

Thanks Greg.   Yes it is trailered sometimes, and I hadn't thought of the potential damage from that.  That's a great point.  Looks like the transom makes the most sense.
