Screen anomalies
« on: August 04, 2014, 05:07:25 PM »
Hello all this past week we conducted a body recovery operation on the body of water I police in Mississippi. During the operation there were in excess of 9 boats all with sidescan running in many cases with in 50ft of each other. After day one of the search I noticed anomalies on the screen I could only describe a sprites (see right side scan of pic), and only on the right side of the screen. Can anyone tell me what may be causing this? Also on a side note the 1197 we use will not consistently hold a bottom depth, but will still side scan any ideas as to what may be the cause? Bad transducer maybe?

9 boats with SideScan ...that's a lot of overlapping fan beams...

Crosstalk interference...

"Sprites" mirrored on both side of the SI image is usually RFI from some errant source...

"Sprites" on 1 side only are usually crosstalk from another unit...(other boats in this case)...

You also mentioned problems with the unit holding bottom...

Is there a 2d xducer connected with the AS SIDB Y cable in this setup or is the 2d coming from the same HDSI xducer...??

What software version is the unit running...??

Hi Rickie thanks for the reply. I neglected to say that this image was taken with no other boats in the area a couple of days later which is what worries me that all the crosstalk may have damaged the transducer somehow. I went ahead and ordered a new transducer just in case. There is only one transducer connected at this time, and the software is the latest version.

Well maybe I'm not picking out the mirrored "sprites" on the left...

If there were no other sonar units running in your boat or anywhere close to you...it may be RFI...

You might try turning off every electrical device in the boat and them turn them on 1 at a time until the "Sprites" show up...

Then you can try turning up the "Noise Filter" under the Sonar tab...

Any cross-talk should not have damaged the transducer SWAT-COP but the problem could still be in the transducer itself.  Test your 1197 unit with the new transducer see what you get.  The old transducer starting to fail could also be a possible cause of the “sprites”.
