Side imaging stopped working
« on: September 28, 2009, 02:46:33 PM »
I wonder can anyone help, the side imaging on my 1197c has stopped working.  I have tried all the steps on the hummingbird website but have had no success.  The down beam is working 100% but I cannot get a picture from the side scan.

Nothing?  No lines, no static, nothing?  Hmmmm?

Please let us know your setup.  IE. Transducers, Y-cables, switches, etc.

First thing would be to check every single connection.  Unplug it, then plug it back in.  Also check wiring for any abrasions or cuts.

Have you recently done any upgrades?  Or anything different than normal?

If your set-up is not already wired with the HDSi transducer connected directly into the 1197 unit try testing it that way.
Also try testing your 1197 on someone else’s boat that has an Si unit (even though its not an 1197) and test their unit on your boat and transducer.  This will show where the problem is (with the unit or the transducer/cabling set-up).

:( Familiar thing this is going to be.
This is the third one in 3 weeks time with the same 1197 problem.

One known issue is blown SI amplifiers.

Check the voltage to the unit with a multimeter.... The unit should be hooked up with power that is direct to the battery. This will allow for low voltage and interferance from other systems on your boat. You have us all scratching out heade here.... lol

Sorry for the slow response, my friend who has the issue will reply with more details
So far we have tried the following with no success:
 - Disconnected all the cables and reconnecting again
 - Applied the latest update
 - Tried various different setting in menus, after restting to defaults

The screen just shows the scan lines which never change.  All other features are working fine, does anyone know if the side scan info comes via a pin of their own on the connection.  Just incase this might have become dirty or something.  We really are scratching ours heads since everything else works.

The Si sonar comes in on two different pins plus a common ground.  The 2D sonar is working so the ground connection is probably fine.  Best bet is to test it on someone else’s boat that has an Si transducer - any of the Si transducers will work to test it, just be sure and reset the units menus to their default settings by using the Restore Defaults menu.  You could also test it on someone’s boat that has a QuadraBeam or WideSide transducer.  All you are looking for is data in the Si beams to hsow that the problem is in the transducer.  If nothing shows in the Si beams than the problem is in the unit at least (there could be a problem with the transducer that affected the unit, so send both in for testing and servicing).
