NMEA, I'm confused
« on: February 20, 2014, 08:23:12 AM »
A few months ago, I wanted to get a fuel flow sensor for my boat that had a pre - NMEA 2000 engine on it.  I thought rather than buy a gauge and drill another hole in the dash,  it would be better to buy a NMEA fuel flow sensor and plug it up to the 998c SI.  I then fired it up in simulation mode and found that fuel flow/burn rate was not an option for my display outputs..  So I posted about it in the wish list section and moved on with my life, not doing anything.   Then I come across this thread:  http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/index.php?topic=6756.msg40176#msg40176
So now I'm back to wondering..  If I get a NMEA backbone with a fuel flow sensor, will the unit see it and give me the option to display that if I'm not in simulation mode?

I'd be glad to try to help you, but I know nothing about NMEA, so your better off without my "help".

Have you tried sending a PM to either of the guys working on the problem?  They have a lot of time and effort in it.

YES IT WILL WORK AS LONG AS THE INSTANCE IS RECOGNIZED AND DOES NOT CLASH AND IF THE PGN IS ALSO CORRECT

I did send a pm to Viper.  He responded, but he has an advanced (modern) engine that has the NMEA built in.  Sounds like it may work, but I'm not in the "gamble $500 to see if it works" club.

This sounds promising.  What is a PGN?
