Very long loading time of recorded data files
« on: January 18, 2010, 03:07:45 PM »
Hi, I have 2 laptops with comparable spec's. Starting HumViewer on both of them is equally fast. Other Java-applications on both of the laptops work well. But on one laptop in HumViewer, it takes more than 10 minutes to load a recorded DAT-file, whereas on the other it takes about seconds. Any idea about the cause of this extreme long loading time.

Regards, Peter.

Hi Peter and welcome to the forum!
I'm not an IT crack, but here are my 2 cents.

Maybe not enough working space or different Java versions?

I hope the IT wizards or Martin will give a closer look on this.

Hello Harry, Thanks. And your "YES,.....WE SCAN" is cool.

Some thought: could it be a codecs issue?

Regards, Peter.

Oooops,
now you got me pants down. As I said I'm not that familiar with all the IT/PC stuff.
I'm glad if I can get my act together in Geman, but in English I end up "System overload".

Hello Gert,

First the "fast" one: Acer Aspire 9920, Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 @ 2 GHr, 2 GB RAM, about 120 Gb free disk space, Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2

Now the "slow" one: HP Pavillion HDX9300, Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 @ 2.1 GHz, 3 Gb RAM, about 180 Gb free disk space, Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2

Both runing the same Java release

According to these spec's the "slow" one should be the fastest. I think since HumViewer make use of some kind of mediaplayer class (see C:\Program Files\Humminbird\HumViewer\ext\JMF\lib) it could be some invalid codecs. The HP Pavillion is a state-of-the-art multimedia thing, including alalog and digital TV.

Regards, Peter.

Hi Peter
It is correct that HumViewer do use some codecs, but only when you are creating movies of your recordings. So that can not do anything to your loadng time.

Could your harddisk on the 'slow' computer be heavily fragmented ? When loading the recordings the program basically just read through the files and create some mappings in memory, so I woud say that only two factors should be important; amount of memory and harddisk access time.

Various programs or processes in memory of the PC can brake work (i.e. viruses or antivir, etc.)

Hi Martin,

Following examples are from the same data file.

I attached a doc ("Fast-Slow after loading.doc") where I paste the screen shorts (fast vs. slow) immediatelly after loading including the task manager. Typically, the Java process for the "fast one" takes about 119000 kB whereas the "slow one" takes 820000 kB. Bizarre, isn't it... Also, have a look at the difference in trackplot window. It seems that the "slow one" is only partially loaded.

It becomes clear when I start the Play-function (attachment "Fast one Play completed.doc" and "Slow one Play completed.doc") that the "slow one" was not fully loaded. The screen shorts are taken at the end of a play.

Any idea's???? Peter.

Hi Peter
No good ideas...

In the log folder under the HumViewer installation directory you get a log file. Could you please email the log files from both computers to me: humviewer@cm-johansen.dk

Then I will take a look at it, and hopefully find something.
/Martin

If you look on your docs  fast one and slow one, you will see that the file lengt is different.   one is 02:09   and one is  09:29

Why  ??

It becomes clear when I start the Play-function (attachment "Fast one Play completed.doc" and "Slow one Play completed.doc") that the "slow one" was not fully loaded. The screen shorts are taken at the end of a play.

Any idea's???? Peter.

Hi,

I don't know why there is a difference in file size. So I did following experiment:

I copied my data on a memory stick an launched Humviewer on the "fast one". As expected it runs fine. Then I inserted the stick in the "slow one" and again launched Humviewer. As expected it get stucked.

Peter.

Hi, all of you...

Problem solved. Here is the story.

Inspired by my previous mail, I copied the data from the "fast one" to a SD instead of copying it to my USB stick. I inserted the SD into the "slow one" and IT WORKED ! ! !

Probably a bad USB stick. I used the USB stick to copy the data from the "fast one" to the "slow one" without knowing of having corrupt data. So the data on the hard disk of the "slow one" was corrupted too. Switching the data source from HD to USB didn't make any sence since both data were corrupted, althought according to the Windows file explorer all files were equal in size compared to the original data on the hard disk of the "fast one".

I am sorry for the time you all kindly have invested for helping me out when at the end it's course is a stupid mal-functioning USB stick. Nevertheless my special thanks to all of you.

Best regards, Peter.

Peter

Never need to apologize for any questions or ideas.  That is what this site is all about as Harry said, we learn from each other.  No matter what the issue is, even if it has been asked 100 times, it will help someone else.

Glad you figured it out.

George
