I would try the following:
 - Save the Nav Data (waypoints, tracks and routes) from both units.  Save the Nav data from each unit if it is different or just from one unit if both units share all the same Nav data.  This Nav data needs to be saved to your computer.  Before reinstalling this Nav data at the end of this procedure; you need to open it up in the HumminbirdPC program and re-save it to your computer as a *.gpx file.  We have seen where there has been corrupted Nav data that cause the InterLink not to work properly.
 - Delete the Nav Data off of the SD memory card so that it is blank.
 - Delete the Nav Data from both units and the InterLink (if possible).
 - Disconnect both units from the Interlink (and if you have them: WeatherSense, Nav Weather Receiver, Remote Sonar Link).
 - Perform a software update in both units if one is available.  Be sure that you only have one software update file on the SD card at a time; so if you are using only one SD memory card you will have to delete the software update file you used for the first unit before copying the software update file for the second unit to the SD memory card.
 - Reconnect the unit that was plugged into the Port 1 connector on the InterLink, to the InterLink again.
 - Power this unit on and allow it to update the InterLink.  Be sure to set it to participate in the InterLink system the way you want it to.
 - Power this unit off and reconnect the second unit.
 - Power both units on and set the second unit to participate in the InterLink the way you want it to.  Both units should now be working and you should be getting GPS on both units.
 - Reload you Nav data but only after opening it in the HumminbirdPC program and uploading it to the SD memory card once again.

ok Greg i tried the process .. i saved all my wpts and all ... so we are good their but the steps didnt work .. it still doesnt recognize the interlink never asked to participate .. heres a lil rundown .. i was running my boat and gps just quit on me at the console... witch was on my 1198 ... so i decided to disconnect 1198 port 1 at the interlink and connected my 788 c into port 1 ..... when i did this and turned on my 788 it said that the interlink was reprograming and to the best of my knowledge gps didnt work thier either....  so tonight i tried all the steps and nothin .. however i disconnected gps from interlink and connected it to my 1198 at console and it works fine.. it just dont work through interlink... could the interlink be bad ????? system test still shows interlink disconnected

I see you reconnected but how did the connectors look. Make sure no bent pins.
Otherwise the interlink could be bad.
Would be nice if we had some diagostics for this stuff..

If all the cables are connected up and none of your units show it as connected then it sounds like the InterLink has died on you.  Call the Humminbird Customer Resource folks and see about getting it looked at.

If I recall my issue earlier this year, wasn't there something related with performing a software update on the unit and then plugging in the interlink which was set up on the old software version?  Could this be an issue here?

Yes the connections require compatable software versions.

Not if he followed the steps I gave him muskyhunter.  I told him to update the software in both units.  If he did that, when he reconnected the first unit back to the InterLink; it should have reprogrammed the InterLink and so would not be the issue now.

Sorry Greg, I did skim through that information too quickly.
