ONIX and i-pilot link hook up
« on: April 25, 2015, 05:15:50 PM »
If anyone has this set up please help ...... the i-pilot link for ONIX and ION operations guide, I strongly suspect, is wrong.

under section 3 of the installation portion it gives two options ..... one connection directly from the i-pilot link motor to the unit and the other through a ethernet port (hub)

1) For a direct connection - If says use "AS EC QDE" and a "AS EC Chart" ..... here's the issues - I am certain they mean "cord" not "chart"which could be confusing and secondly - the AS EC QDE cord is NOT COMPATIBLE with the ONIX is it? The humminbird website list this adapter cord to cover a number of units and does not mention ONIX compatibility.

so - I'm thinking - no problem I will use my ethernet port ( the legacy version ) ...... so I go to the next installation row .....

2) For installation through a ethernet port use "AS ETH 5PS" ?????? and two more of those AS EC "charts". Again, assuming they mean ethernet cords ...... as far as the AS ETH 5PS .... I don't see that part number available anywhere anymore .... the ethernet port for the ion/onix is the AS ETH PXG isn't it? That's what the humminbird website says ...... so ....If the AS ETH 5PS is the legacy port I used on the 800 series units and the minnkota will it still work with the ONIX?

Please help me ..... I have a headache.

All I'm doing is trying to hook up my minnkota to my ONIX what are my tried and tested options - I suspect trusting the operations guide (like I did last time) will lead me to more money spent and more confusion, frustration and delays.

I have a legacy 5 port ethernet, lots of ethernet cables and, for now, only the one onix unit on the dash .....  so I could do it either way.

Greg will check in Monday I'm sure to help with the mis-terminology in the installation guide ...

The AS EC QDE adapter cable is only used with 700 HD series units with the Quick detach base ... and the xx9 series Ethernet capable units (the direct Ethernet connection was moved to the cable collector for the xx9 series units) ...

The Ethernet cable should plug right into the Onix with no adapter ...
-------

I think the iPilot Link should have come with a 30' Ethernet cable which should plug right into the Onix ...

The AS ETH 5PXG switch should only be needed if you have a 3rd Ethernet device to connect ...
-----

The AS ETH 5PXG is recommended for the Onix/ION ...it is designed for higher data flow characteristics ...

The legacy AS ETH 5PS has been verified by users to not be dependable without issues on the Onix/ION ...

Thanks for the info ..... that's pretty much what I figured or assumed, but you are right, we will let Greg wade in to confirm our suspicions ... and I'm sure people have done it both ways ...... for now .....I am just going to directly connect the two together for now via ethernet cable.

Confirmed!
[wading out]

I sent a message about the ONIX/ION operations manual and the errors you found.
Sorry about that.
