Viewing Helix 8 recordings off the boat
« on: October 01, 2019, 04:55:14 PM »
So I have a Helix 8 chirp mega si+ mega di+. I have two things I’m trying to figure out. The only way I can watch my Helix recordings (with the unit off the boat mind you) is in simulator mode. In regular mode it will only cycle through 2 map views and the snapshot and recording screen. I also was am trying to figure out why my wavepoints are being stored on my navionics map? I have heard there is a way to transfer them but do not see it on my unit. I have been using Humviewer but the picture on my unit is more clear showing more detail.

In normal Mode the unit looks for attached items and then populates views for those items detected attached  ... With no xducer attached (in Normal Mode) you will not get any Sonar views  ...
-----

Waypoints are written directly to the unit internal memory  ...

The only way to have waypoints on any card (blank SD or map card) is if you manually exported those waypoints to the card thru the Waypoint Management Menu under the Nav tab  ...
-----

Martin has not updated his Humviewer program in many years  ... so quality of playback with the newer HB version models may or may not be satisfactory  ...

You might look in Reef Master farther down in the Software forum on the main page  ...

Hey Rickie I get that it will not show screens that would be affiliated with the transducer but would that affect the playback of recordings? I haven’t noticed a tab for importing/exporting waypoints. I thought it would be like the 798 where it asks you when you insert a card what you want to do.

Options for management of NAV data is found under the NAV Menu Tab.  Below is link to one of many videos by Doug Vahrenberg

I don't think I've ever even tried to playback a recording in Normal Mode  ...

I always use Simulation for that  ...
-----

If the unit is displaying an "Import Waypoints" popup when inserting any card - there are waypoints on that card from a manual export somehow  ...

Open the card on the PC to see if there is a "MATRIX" folder on the card  ... The unit creates the "MATRIX" folder on the card upon initiation of a manual export command  ...

If this "Matrix" folder is on a map card - the "MATRIX" folder should be deleted  ...

Hey Rickie i will try that today on my Helix. i have been using humviewer in the past. I have figured out how to view the files on Humviewer but like i said there is no comparison to the image quality from the Helix. I do understand the the program was written for a system some years back and can't process the mega files produced by some of the new systems. I plan on taking the Helix into work with me an do a side by side comparison with two computers with nice screens one with 920x1080 ips with 270 nit and one with 3840x2160 4k Ultra HD screen. I like to view recordings after I'm off the water cause i always feel like i missed something.

Not sure how many people do it but I play back recordings when I've got some slack time at home and create waypoints for spots that are holding fish that show up on the recording and then create a file of those waypoints that can be imported into HB PC.  Over a period of several years, it is interesting to see the patterns that show up when viewing them either on the fish finder or Google Earth Pro.

ezfishn that's actually pretty cool idea. Never thought of tracking the fish movements that way!
