Internal v/s External GPS
« on: December 03, 2010, 05:02:05 PM »
I have a 798 ci and the gps fix is way off when compared to my 997 c with the GRHA puck.  If I connect my external gr50 gps puck to the 798 will my position improve?

Thanks,

Wayne P.

Do you have the units Interlink connected?
What is the EPE on your 798 as compared to the EPE on the 997?

997 epe 5 ft hdop 0.86

798 epe 19-30 ft hdop 1.07

Interlink is set up between both units and working good.

You may want to try setting it to use only the remote GPS antenna. The antenna with both units are the same.
I get 3'-4' EPE in Virginia with my 798ci SI.

Thanks for the help.  If I choose to use the position from the remote gps that would be 15 or so feet away from the trolling motor.  I have an external gr50 that I am not using right now.  If I were to hook that up to the 798 would my epe get better?  Wanted to know before I order the y cable to run the external and the interlink.

There is no way to tell without trying. The best way to try is to disconnect the Interlink from the 798 so the 798 will not be influenced by the 997 antenna, then check the satellite status with the internal antenna setting.  Next hook up your spare GPS antenna to the 798, just lay it beside the unit, and tell the unit to use it.
Compare the two status results to see if there is a big or any difference.
Your problem may be how you have the Interlink connected units set to use the GPS antennas, you may have a faulty internal antenna, or you may have a unit mounting issue.

Well I used interlink to use the GRHA puck on the 798ci and the position matched the 997c.  So I disconnected the interlink and connected the GR50 puck to the 798ci and the position improved to show an average epe of 6.  Guess I will buy an AS-YC and keep the external hooked up.  I don't think it is a mounting issue.  The unit is on the front deck and the elevated above all other objects.

Thanks Again
