788ci combo
« on: January 15, 2012, 09:01:45 AM »
I installed the update 5.840 that was on my Humminbird profile for my 788ci combo and when I go to change the transducer to quad, it shuts the unit down, I have to restart unit. What is the update used before the 5.840? I want to go back to the last update before I installed the 5.840.

I did all the rules before installing any updates such as resetting factory defaults etc.

This is not the HD.... this is the ci combo

From what I see on Humminbird's site both 788s are HDs, the difference appears that the more expensive one has Down Imaging.  Not sure when you purchased yours or what model it is.  You can call Humminbird customer service and give them your serial number and they should be able to tell you the model and when it was built.  HB's customer service is excellent they will take care of you.

The two models listed are 788ci HD Combo and 788ci HD DI Combo

Greg posted this a while back.

If you want to know how old your unit is just look at the serial number as it is date coded.
The first two numbers are the year, the next two are the month and the next two are the day of the month.
As an example: if your serial number was 12010305-0159 than it would have been produced on January 3rd of 2012 (yesterday!).  The other numbers represent the test station (05) and the sequential number of the unit that was tested at that station on that day (159th unit tested).

This will tell you when it was built. From there you can have HB tell you the code level and what it can do.

Looking at Humminbird's site it appears that one of the major differences is that 788ci HD Combo's software is not upgradeable where as 788ci HD DI Combo is upgradeable.  Both units are listed to be able to use the QuadraBeam, it looks like 788ci HD Combo does not have Down Imaging, beyond that they appear to be the same.

My unit was built May 05, 2009 and it is NOT a DI unit.
What I am wanting is ....the update that was available before I updated to the 5.840. (update was on my profile at HB)
This update is making my unit shut down when I click on Quad transducer. Yes, I am using a Quad ducer. Everything was fine before I updated to 5.840....Thanks

You could try what Jim45498 did and load an older version of software into your unit.  Send me a direct e-mail if this is what you want to try and do and I can send a link back to the software.  Be sure to include the full model name as well as serial number of your unit for this.

Tazzman, I think I got it figured out.....I went to sonar settings, I went down and clicked on the quad transducer , it shut down my unit but when I started it back up and went to the sonar settings again the quad showed as the transducer in use.
It did the same thing in simulator.
I will just leave the setting until the next update and go through it all again. I will leave the 5.840 on unit for now.

This should not shut down the unit but maybe HB will put out a fix for that particular problem. Right now I don't plan on changing transducers. But if I did I am sure everything would be ok without the quad.

Hope this helps you Tazzman...Jim

I am also considering upgrading my software on 788ci HD (no DI) unit to the 5.840 software. But, with the tiny problem you guys had wondering if it is worth it. Does anyone know what the benefit / improvement is for the 5.840 vs the 5.400 that my unit came with?  :-\

If your unit has 5.400 software now it will receive the following software updates if you load the 5.840 version:

5.410 – Ethernet capability was added.  It also corrected Interlink issues including disconnection issues, phantom waypoints and additional icons.  Added annotations to chart layers.  Fixed issues relating to navigating at slow speeds.

5.500 – Corrected phantom tracks issue; Corrected waypoint skipping crashes; Corrected crashes when the Ethernet connection was removed; Corrected communications issues caused when Interlink went offline and correct sonar recording playback issues.

5.590 – Corrects course lag problem that occurs when turning at low speeds.

5.840 – Add waypoint management to the navigation/gps menus.

Thanks very much for the detailed reply. Sounds like these are all bug fixes and improvements. I can see no negative reason not to install it.  ;D
