Title: Tips for installing shoot-thru-the-hull puck transducer

Decided to add a shoot-thru-the-hull puck transducer to my setup - currently have an 1198cSI/DI with the transducer on the transom, but at speed and in rough conditions it is less than ideal for picking up depth and bottom soundings.  Going to try the shoot-thru for that after using the Y cable so that I still retain SI/DI using the external transducer.

The guys at Key West told me that the only "cored" part of my hull that I could not mount the puck was in an 8" square around the bilge pump/float switch in the bilge. 

So, is there a trick to allow for me to try out various places in the bilge without permanently attaching it until I find the right place?  I was almost thinking of creating a tube, say out of PVC, with plumbers putty on the bottom edges to help stick and conform to the slightly angled bilge, and then putting mineral oil in it and then place the puck in it - I could then move it around while testing it in the water to see how well it worked before permanently mounting it.

I would add that you should use something to remove any paint or other coatings from the inside of the fiberglass hull before testing or installing.  Some have used an appropriately sized Fortner bit for this.  The idea is to get down to the raw fiberglass so that there is nothing else there to block the sonar.  It also will make a good surface for the epoxy to bond to.
