898 c si transducer mounting location
« on: April 13, 2010, 09:04:30 AM »
I'm hoping someone can provide some guidance in mounting the transducer on a TR 21. The boat has 2 steps and then the transom. I have tried mounting on the step nearest the transom to the right of the motor, and also directly under the jack plate on the transom. Both areas loose bottom contact and sonar picture over 10mph

Losing contact at speeds over 10 is not uncommon.

Browse thru this forum topics and look thru the posts for losing display.

Check out the posts with pictures as they relate to the mounting position of the transducer.

Also take a picture of your transom/keel so others can post comments on a location.

Yes, indeed the location of the transducer is sensitive not only to left/right display but to losing display at speed above trolling.  Check topics on thru-the-hull mounts.

Howie,

Welcome to the forum.  If you can, post some pictures of your transom from straight on and from the side.  This will help immensely.

Thank You, here are a few pics of the transom area. The red marking is where the transducer was first mounted. At best this position is too low and cannot be adjusted higher. You can see the current location under the jack plate, it has more interference than the first. There is (I think) enough room above the trailer roller to mount it to the first step but I would think that would be a vulnerable position to place it. Any feedback would Be appreciated  :) ila_renderedila_rendered

Howie,
I would buy an AS-Si-DB-Y cable and XP-9-20 transducer and mount the transducer inside-the-hull in the bilge area of your boat.  This will be the best location on your boat (and any fiberglass planning type hull) in order to get a high-speed depth reading.  Leave the HDSi transducer where it is so it is somewhat protected and you get good Si sonar readings as well.

Yep, what Greg said. I mounted the gianormous SI transducer on a step on my Ranger transom that looks just like the area you mounted yours and it works great....but only at idle. The SI only works properly at idle speeds anyway. If you mounted it flush with the bottom you would get high speed 2D but if you fish the stumps like I do in East Texas you would constantly be knocking it up or breaking it. Get the thru-hull transducer and Y-cable  for pretty cheap from Humminbird and have the best of both worlds.
