Title: linking non-hd 798ci si and 998 hdsi combo
Post by: Fishndav on September 16, 2013, 10:06:47 AM
Hi-
I’m new to the forums here and have been trying to get the info to my questions using the search tool, but I’m not having any luck. Before getting to that though- THANKS to everyone here that contributes, this site is full of all sorts of great info that is helping my transition to all HB.

OK-
I have a non-HD 798ci si that is being moved from my console to my bow, and I’m replacing my Lowrance x25 at the console with a 998 hdsi combo. My plan is to replace the small si xducer on the transom with the large one, use a y cable and dual beam in the hull for standard depth finder readings, use the external GPS antenna for the 998 only. I also need to link the two units together. I am also planning on adding a weather sense box sometime soon.

THE QUESTION: I can’t find a block diagram or explanation about linking the two units together. I know I need the interlink box, but that is about it. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to link these together?

Also- I'm open to suggestions if it doesn't sound like my approach is right on my plans for this..

Thanks

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums Fishndav.

The InterLink accessory is your only chance of linking these two units together, however… to get the InterLink to work you need to be running the same ‘level’ of software in both.  Example: the 798ci Si units were last updated with the 6.300 version software.  Your 998 would also have to also be running a 6.XXX version of software.  no problems with that right now as the current software release for the 998 units is still a 6 level software.  However, if they ever get to a 7.000+ level software, your units may not communicate at all.

Personally I would look at selling the 798ci Si unit and getting an Ethernet capable unit whether that be another 798ci HD Si unit or something else.  The Ethernet connection is less troublesome and will allow the transfer and use of more information and accessories.

Thanks Greg-
Maybe at some point in the future I will upgrade the 798 but for now I am committed to using it up front. Do you know if there is any documentation about the wiring and configuration I need to do to make the connection?

Here's the PDF manual for the Interlink while you wait for more info from Greg...

This should help you out as far as connections go.
The InterLink should come with the two cables to connect each unit to the InterLink module as well as the two Choke cables.  The Choke cables can be used in addition to or in place of the standard connection cables between your units and the InterLink module.
Good luck.
