899ci hd si problem
« on: March 28, 2014, 02:34:32 AM »
Hello
I have been reading alot of threads about people how has problem with blurry images on their 899 unit, and I am one of those. I have the hdsi trancduser. Is it a software issue?
Is it possible to downgrade the firmware to an older 898c to test If it maybe can solve some problems?

Model 899 software will not work on the 898.  The 899 is a newer unit and different processor.

You have blurry images in what sonar on your 899 unit with the HDSi transducer?
The 898 units use a different software load versus the 899 units, so you should not be able to do this.  Even if you could, there are internal differences between these units that may not allow the older software to work right or even run at all.

I am having the same problem with a new 899 hdsi unit. I traded up for the hd transducer thru humminbird expecting to get a great picture. I cannot adjust it in any configuration to even get as good a picture as the 455khz. Like others comment, its just a bright washed out picture on 800khz. I feel like I just wasted my money. I am also getting some interference from a 596 hddi unit. I have the transducers on opposite ends of an 18 ft boat but have the units mounted beside each other. Any ideas on the best way to fix this problem?

I read on another forum that there is a software problem in the 899 associated with the 800Khz......Keep an eye on your HB account for an update.
Haven't heard when they expect to have it resolved.....Maybe call customer service and inquire.  The more people that do....The higher the priority will become.

05G3yamaha,
When you turn off the 596c HD DI unit, does the interference go away?

Does not go away. I did find today that I am getting some interference from my aerator pump. When it cycles on i get lines on the screen.  I saw Doug Varenbergs video about wrapping transducer wire around a ferrite magnet. Is this something that might help my issue? The 800khz screen is never good.  I can turn off everything in my boat and it is washed out. Also today on 455 the picture was no good at one time. I tried turning it off and that did not work, so I reset defaults and it was better. Never had this much trouble with any of my other Humminbird units.

05G3yamaha,
The Ferrite ring will help if the interference is coming into the unit through one of the cables.  You may still want to check on the wiring to that aerator pump and maybe replace it if it is causing the interference.

The 800kHz Si sonar wash out is a different issue that is being worked on by the Humminbird Engineers.

The 455kHz not being good could have been due to a menu setting or maybe water conditions (there have been several reports of pollen causing sonar reading issues).  It is hard to say without seeing a screen snapshot or actually being there.

I added two of the ferrite rings and also found that voltage was a little low to my units. I ran wire directly from my cranking battery to the units. Tried it out yesterday and seems to be better with the exception of the 800khz issue which you said is being worked on, and one other issue. When I run my chart speed on 1 or 2 when i am trolling, the down imaging screen goes completely weird. Its like a grid on the screen. Doesn't affect the side image at all. I can switch between SI and DI and when the page opens the info that's already there is clear but new info has the grid. I can even adjust sensitivity or contrast and it will create a clear area then goes back to the weird screen. Only time I have seen it is on chart speed 1 or 2 but this is where I use it most. Do you have any ideas on this or have you heard of others having this problem? I really appreciate your help. I haven't played around with the screen shots so I am not sure how to do that, but I do have a pic on my cell phone.

I posted them on the other thread called "899 blurry images" or something like that.  I tried 2 control heads and two transducers.  All combinations fail on the 800 kHz mode.
