GPS Quit Working - Now What?
« on: July 17, 2011, 10:37:40 AM »
Ive had my 898 since March 2010. I updated my software on Friday and fished yesterday. On the way back to the ramp I hit a series of boat wakes pretty hard and my unit gave me a message something like "GPS Not Working" or something to that effect. I powered the unit off and back on and it took an unusually amount of time during the "loading sequence". Now I have NO GPS at all and can't see it on any of the views. I checked the wiring this morning and everything looks OK. I can't find any troubleshooting guide and I don't know anyone else with an 898 to swap around with to troubleshoot.

HELP!!

Dumb Question
When you checked the wiring, did you literally UNPLUG the unit? or just do a visual inspect.

Tx; You might try " Restore defaults" to remove the update.

1. Save all stored data to SD card and remove it.
2. Go to the "Product Manual" on the "Set Menu Tab".
3. Highlight "Restore Defaults" tab follow inst.
4. Power down unit and restart unit.
5. Check GPS status let the unit run for 15 min check GPS status. If unit  function is OK Power off. If NOT call HB.
6. Down load "NEW" update from HB to "NEW" SD card.
7. Upload as per Product Manual inst.

Post outcome to Forum.

Good Luck and Enjoy :) Roddy

OK, Tx Buddah
Unplug the GPS cable from the head unit and plug it back in the power on and see what happens.
If the unit worked with GPS showing after your last update and quit after you hit the wake, it sounds more like hardware than software. I think the reason it look longer starting up was because the unit was looking for the connection the the GPS puck.

Just my $.02

I'm going to try restoring the factory defaults when it cools off this evening, I just did a little "honey do" for my wife and got a little too warm....if that doesn't work I'll be on the phone with HB at 8:01 in the morning >:(

I'll keep ya'll updated.

Not sure if you got your call in this morning or not TXBuddha, but I would try testing your unit on someone else’s boat that has a Humminbird unit with an external GPS Receiver.

If you cannot do that than check the wires in the end of the GPS pigtail wire.  This is the shorter second cable that comes out of the cable connector for the GPS Receiver.  Take the black plastic cap off (save it) and make sure that none of the wires is making electrical connection to the other and test your unit again and see if the GPS has started working or not.
