998si & 9hdsi - Depth not working at plane
« on: May 22, 2010, 09:46:24 PM »
My unit's depth quits working once I get above 8MPH. I have a thru hull transducer on a 2008 Ranger boat. The mount is located on the bottom center of the hull well in front of the motor. any ideas?

when your boat is on plain most of the hull is out of water.transducer won't read though air.  Run your boat past a freind on a dock and check the location of the transducer.   You can also create a void in the water as it goes around the transducer. Hate to think you got in the wrong lacation.   :-[

My boat: '08 Ranger 188 VS had 2 factory installed X135 Lowrance units. Ranger put the temp probe thru the hull at the rear and the transducer was mounted inside the hull.
I "assumed" the temp probe hole would be the best place to put the SI transducer. It works well for the SI and temp, just no depth past 8MPH. It is a raised step area of the hull and it is possible that on plane it's out of the water.  If so, I  have two choices : Move the ransducer.....ouch or live with it and install a separate in-dash depth guage that  can shoot from inside the hull. Of course, this all assumes I am shooting air with my current set up.

I'm sure your out of the water or so much bubble turbulance that the ducer can not read.... You can look up similar problems people have had with your modle boat on the search option on this sight.... Just put your boat modle in the search and see it you can find it that way.... Good luck

I saw this posting from another Ranger owner who was having issues with his transdcer mounted on the step of his boat. Here is Greg's response:

Howie,
I would buy an AS-Si-DB-Y cable and XP-9-20 transducer and mount the transducer inside-the-hull in the bilge area of your boat.  This will be the best location on your boat (and any fiberglass planning type hull) in order to get a high-speed depth reading.  Leave the HDSi transducer where it is so it is somewhat protected and you get good Si sonar readings as well.

I wonder if Greg's suggested cable set up would work with my current transducer??
