I am new to Humminbird ans this sight. Thanks for much helpful info here.

My question for my new 898si unit is about depth readout in shallow water. Even in 2D, If I am in 3 1/2 feet of less, my unit will not read depth. I have to switch to Lowrance unit for shallow depth. Can anyone tell me why this is the case? Other than this problem, the unit works great.

There's been a lot of issues with shallow water readings on these birds...

Seems to be affecting some units but not all of them..

I think HB is working on a software fix for this....

Is your bottom display in DI and 2d steady...and only the digital  depth display not reading correctly??

This seems to be the case with the units that are having the shallow water problem...

Yes the image seems stable enough. Its just the digital number that just cycles through crazy readings. This is very frustrating at times.

I agree..very frustrating...

I usually have my 3 way split view up anyway so I just watch my bottom contour on my DI and 2d screens as they seem to be accurate and steady....

I also have the problem and I'm waiting on the fix.  My bow unit is a 788ci and it also has the same problem. :-[

Its too bad we have to pay these big dollars for units that don't operate properly. This should not happen. Oh well, I guess I will have to wait for a fix also.

These units are basically small computers and we all know that computers have glitches...(just ask Microsoft and their update website)...

Nature of the technological beast...still frustrating tho...

I talked with Jennifer at HB.  She checked and stated that a new software fix would be posted soon.  If you have registered your units, she recommended that you check the HB website. ;D

I will let all you guys know when the updates are released.  The 1197c update is already out and I am sure the others will be posted soon!

I downloaded the new update 4.970 to my HB 898c SI. The same day I made a test on the lake and I found out, that the new update didn´t fixed the problem with shallow water. The problem with shallow water was more  than before, so I installed the old version 4.880 again.

i also i had a few times i was in 2' of water and it read 585'... >:(
thats WITH the newest download..
