1199 screen problems
« on: March 24, 2014, 01:30:07 AM »
I purchased a new 999ci and a new 1199ci a couple weeks ago. When I received them I played with the 999 a bit with a 12v battery in the house. But not until today did I power up the 1199 and the screen of it has two major issues that the 999 doesn't have at all.

The first pic below is of the 999 as it's booting - and it looks just fine. This gives you an idea of what the 1199 should look like as it is booting.

But the 1199 has severe "backlight bleeding" / "light leakage" as you can see in this second pic.

The third and fourth pics have another separate screen issue in the lower LH corner that looks like some kind of glue residue underneath the screen when the power is off, or I suppose it is something scratched off of that layer of the screen in this area since the light comes through it.

Has anyone else seen this type of severe "backlight bleeding" on their old or their new units? Any suggestions? I wonder if all the 1199 units are like this and I need to just take it back and get another 999. Or could Humminbird could assure me that they could check another unit and replace mine with one that doesn't have any screen problems? I'd hate to have to send this brand new unit back to get it "repaired" and would feel better with a new unit that hasn't been cracked open for repair or screen replacement.

The screenshots in my original post were taken in a dark environment, which is of course sometimes a real life condition. These pics in this post show the same problem in daylight. (2 problems again, lower LH corner of screen problem and backlight bleed problem.)

Note the backlight bleed problem on the 1199 and the same picture below it of the 999 without the problem. See the difference?

Here's another example that shows the difference, 1199 first and 999 second.

Hadn't seen this issue on the forums before. I'd call H-bird, chances are they'll send you a shipping label for that 1199 and just ship you a new one. The 9 series are all new so I'm sure they are working all of the bugs out. Bummer, buy they'll straighten ya out.

...........thanks Rotus623
Greg, I'm relatively new to this forum so I don't know how this will work. I'd rather not have to email them a bunch of pictures to explain the problem to them since I've already done that here.

Can you tell me if Humminbird can simply look at this posting and the pictures attached and comments I've made and tell me if in fact they can send me a new unit that doesn't have this backlight bleeding issue? Obviously they can send me something that does not have the flaw in the lower LH corner, but what about the backlight bleeding?

I was hoping that you or someone that owns one can tell me if all 1199s have this problem. It is of course most evident when you are booting up but as you can see it is surely there once booted up as well, just not as prominently.

But when the 999 boots up it does not have this backlight bleed problem.

This is clearly a defect. I know of other 1199 users that have had no issues like this. I have seen a few posts on this board where people have had issues with their '99 series and the company sent them a tracking number, they sent in their unit, and H-bird just sent them a new one. Trust me Humminbird has done nothing but listen to me ramble and take care of my issues. They sent me a $20 power cable today free of charge to help me get rid of TM interference. And the unit it was for is 3 years old. Point is, they don't want you sitting around in early spring waiting for your unit to be repaired. If you voice your concerns Im sure theyd highly consider sending you a fresh unit. Luckily you haven't installed the 11 yet, so if you bought it in person you could just return it to the store and swap it out. Just call them.

Sure rpro you can reference any post on this board but you had best give them a link to do so.  That means sending an e-mail message to them to begin with or calling in and setting up an e-mail exchange.

rpro:
These things happen.
My brand new 1197 had to be sent back twice because of screen problems.
The way I understand it, screen brightness can vary from one unit to the other.
Humminbird has some standards or thresholds which are deemed acceptable.
Anything below those, and they will repair or replace your unit.

It's no big deal sending your unit in.  Just call them up and calmly explain the problem.  Be pro-active and don't sit around and mope about your screen problem.  Call them up and talk to somebody about it.

If they determine you must send your unit in, then ask them for a pre-printed mailing label, so it won't cost you anything to send it in.  They WILL NOT volunteer to send you this label.  You have to ask for it.

Treat the Humminbird customer service folks nice, and they will treat you nice.
Catch an attitude and treat them badly, and your unit may sit on a repair table for the rest of the fishing season. :-\

I don’t know about that last part there ITG.  All the units that come in are logged and someone’s backside would be in a sling if one sat around that long!  :o

It was just wishful thinking Greg.
It's what I would do if I was you guys.
Of course it would be only for the very select customers who rant and rave, are always right, and who are never happy, no matter what people try to do for them.
