Serious Interference in 2D! Heeeeelp!
« on: August 31, 2015, 06:56:52 AM »
Hi guys,
Ive been a long time reader of this website and it amazes me the depth  ;D of knowledge that some of you guys have! Im now hoping that someone on here can help point me in the right direction to get my sounder working properly again. Im experiencing major interference whilst using the 2D sonar mode.

I have tried:
1) Re-directing the transducer cable from the stern to the console so that it doesn't come into contact with other power cables……..that didn't work.
2)Re-directed the power cable directly to my spare crank battery which is connected via a switch to parallel my two crank batteries if required…….that didn't work.
3)Ive adjust the height and angle of the transducer so many times the mount bracket looks like swiss cheese!………that hasn't really work.
4)Ive upgrade to the latest version…….that hasn't worked

What I'm  seeing is that when I'm trying to get a little more detail in the bottom by adjusting the gain up, all I get is lots of interference from the surface down to just above the bottom so I can't see if there is any baits etc midwater.
Sometimes the image appears to be smudged (check pic below), and it requires me to switch the sounder off and on again.
I can't really read the sounder at any speed and if its rough also becomes very difficult.

While cleaning the boat on the weekend I noticed the poor condition of the transducer. i do live in a hot climate and it appears the transducer has been exposed to high temps because it looks like a form of glue has oozed out the back and also where the wire enters the transducer……….could this be the source of my troubles?????

I will be very grateful if anyone could offer any advices into what my problem actually is………Cheers Nathan

Try a ferritte ring. Call HB Customer service and explain I had a real problem with a 788 on the front of my old boat. Weeks of work, wiring removing and re routing cables. One ferritte ring cured it all. Went from high noise filter to off. It works.

Son you will not believe the BS I went thru. Told it was the old style trolling motor well hell 1K for a new MK 101. Same problem as bad if not worst ::) Well pulled new wiring, no help, new crank batt. no change. I like my mess 100% or more. The price I paid in service from the best in the business to get it fixed on old boat with no help :-X Then after many calls to HB Service and every body telling me it was MY BOAT got the right person at HB. Senting a Ferritte Ring. Ding Dong it was healed. From High RF Filter to zero. It is the magic bullet. When I purchased the new Ranger and purchased dual 1199's I had the Magic Bullet installed before front unit mounted. The Ring Should be Standard for units with TM mounted transducer. Fix a few Other Brands with the same problem. :D May sent a few to Obama and mayby it will help with his problems :o :o :o :o

It diffinately sounds like what need! I have mentioned it before to the humminbird dealer and he just brushed it off saying they don't work, but I'm going to push to get one anyway. Might even replace the transducer as well to cancel that out.
Is there different types of Ferritte rings or is there just one that does the job. Will I only need one or will I require one one power and one on transducer??

You should have a ferrite ring built into the power cable. The thing I might be concerned with is the transducer cable where it enters the transducer. You may have a compromised ground shield that will set up a scenario which could make your cable very susceptible to radio frequency interference. Bob

Ok,
So I decided that the transducer has to go and I'm going to replace the power cable as it doesn't have a ferritte on it......thanks for the input guys keep it coming!

I'll let you know how I go.

Ferritte Ring goes on Transducer Cable, stick in thru and loop in and out as many times as possible. It will go 7 times, tight but it will work. TRANSDUCER CABLE MY MAN, NOT POWER.

The PC-11 power cable has a choke built into the cable. For imaging units it has been the standard power cable for a few years now. Bob

The wire going into your transducer looks damaged.
At the very least, you probably have water getting in there.
I think your decision to replace the transducer is a good one.

Correct-o ;D PC11 has build in choke on most units. Try the Magic Ring first on the present transducer I think you will be suprised ;D ;D there are instructions on this site  :o I did it all even purchase new TM Fourtex and the ring cured it all.
