Rumor has it that 2010 cartridges will be available in mid January.
Navionics® HotMaps® 2D Lake Maps ($120).
Navionics® HotMaps® Premium 2D Lake Maps ($150).
Navionics® HotMaps® Platinum Multi-Dimensional Lake Maps ($200).
The cartridges cover the same states which have been significantly increased for 2010.

Regardless of the cost difference I am not sure which one would be the best purchase.  Platinum has all the bells and whistles, but at what cost?  I have an 1197c, I am wondering if the platinum cartridge is going to be a memory hog and really slow down the system or be confusing.

While on the lake the 2D system might be more effective and the Multi-Dimensional might be better reviewing on a computer in preparation for going fishing.

Does anyone have any thoughts about the platinum cartridges and whether they are memory hogs?  Which is best for everyday fishing and exploring a new lake.

Hope this makes sense!
George

In my opinion the platinum slows operation. I base this on experience of use of premium and platinum.

Thanks Harry

Have you found any value with the 3 dimensional views?  I believe this is the key difference between the Premium and the platinum cartridges.

It seems to me that with the side imaging and now down imaging we wont need a chip with 3 dimensional views. Being a fisherman I'm not interested in their interpetation of what an area looks like when I can just go there and see for my self. My home lake changes all the time because it is a flood control lake. Features on a map sometimes come into play during full winter draw down.

I also do not go to other lakes so take what I said wirth a grain of salt. ;D
Freedom isnt free, if you want to know the real cost visit a national cemetery or VA Hospital.

Thanks Soretoe,

I agree that down imaging may take a way the value of 3 dimensional views on the lake.  Since I spend my time fishing and only glancing at the screen.  Really I am still in the learning phase with my unit.

I am thinking that the 3 dimensional view may be of some value when planning to go to a new area on a large lake or a new lake.  In the end I may purchase both the 2D and 3D cartridges.  It may be a waste but if it helps me to be a better fisherman it will be worth it.

I haven't found a need for 3d view.Units seem to have issues when using the platinum. It is just a google view, and like you said the lake bottom and ridges as well as channels change over time. So why not use side imaging to give real time viewing. When using a platinum your unit works harder processing info. I much prefer premium for speed and countour. That allows me to view real time underwater features with a date on my snapshots and recordings.I AM NOT AWARE OF ANY BODY OF WATER THAT REMAINS THE SAME IF IT HAS CURRENT VOLUME CHANGES FROM YEAR TO YEAR.When navionics records on lakes their boats can only work in about 6ft to 8ft and will not go into shallow water that has a lot of timber( boat damage is more expensive than leaving a small area uncharted). Hope this helps

Also in Salt Water 3D slows down or even locks the units and is little value added in my opinion.

May be too late but thought I would reply.  I have the Platinum card and I like it(got it on clearance).  I have used the 3d view to quickly look for places I may like to fish on new lakes.  It is more of a novelty than a necessity.  I can find the same info on my paper maps but it does take the thought out of it.  I have found it to be pretty accurate on my home lake.  Also, looking at the google map image versus blank space is pretty cool as well.  Again all of this stuff is more of a luxury.
