899 HD SI Fish ID?
« on: May 04, 2014, 11:30:15 AM »
Hello!  Have been learning a lot about my new 899 here for a while and also a whole lot about sonar / fish finders operation in general. I just upgraded from the PiranhaMax 160 that came with my boat to a new 899 HD SI.  A BIG step up.  So far I am amazed with the new unit.

One question I have is that the Fish ID doesn't seem to be working.  I have the Fish ID turned ON, and have enabled the Fish Alarm to all 3 sizes.  I trolled for 8 hours yesterday (only one salmon to show for it) and although I showed a whole lot of arches on the sonar screen view that I think were fish, I never got one display of the fish icon on any screen.  I tried adjusting the sensitivity and had no change.  It's no big deal, but the fish ID does keep the kids amused for a while, and gives me a glimmer of hope when the fish aren't biting.  Just wondering if I'm not doing something right.  Any pointers?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Welcome to the forum.

I can't help you with your 899 problem.  Can't remember if anyone else has reported a problem with fish ID on the new units.

The weekends are slow sometimes, but Greg has been checking in a lot during the week and will probably be able to help.  Maybe someone else with an 899 will check in and verify if theirs is working OK.
**Looking for the one that makes it all worthwhile**

I don't think any 899's  are  running 6.74......
I'm running 6.94 and I think it came with 6.82 or something like that...
Next time I'm out - maybe I will goof with the fish ID if I remember to!

There is a known bug with the current software and the Fish ID Symbols when you are running the blended 200/83kHz Beam Select menu setting.  I don’t know when they will have a solution for this.

Greg, Thanks for the quick reply.  No big deal as I said before.  I just thought I may have been doing something wrong. If they do sort it out I should be able to just update the software, right??

Hey, Here we are a year later. I've installed the latest software, sent my unit back to the factory and even bought the HD transducer.   Still no little fish symbols.   Don't think I'm doing anything wrong and yes, I know it's just kind of a gimmick deal with the fish alarm, but was hoping it would work this year.  Not sure what the problem is.  I went out today on my lake and saw lots of stuff on the sonar view that looked like fish (lot of white perch here), but never got the "Fish ID" alarm.  I had turned it on, and played with the sensitivity, but still no joy.   Am I the only one still having this issue, or is it with all 899s?  Will try to post a snapshot later.  Needless to say, I am a little disappointed with the unit as it was supposed to work.  I have a hard time swallowing spending a thousand bucks plus on something with a "known bug", and even after waiting a year for the fix and going through the upgrade, it still is a bug.

Here is a pic of what I was seeing on the sonar.  Am I mixed up, or are these fish?

I have 7.460 on my 899... I marked a couple bait balls and switched over to 2D to check out the view and it showed a FISH ID symbol, but that is the only time I have seen it show up (although I only sparatically check 2D while fishing), mostly just running across the lake...

My personal opinion only... I like to see the colored marks rather than fish symbols... the colored marks can tell you WHERE the fish are in your cone (to an extent) and tell you if they are moving/stationary, etc all by the color and mark they make...

yeah.. sucks that it may not be working properly, but don't get too hung up on not seeing little fishies on your screen    ;)

It looks like your xducer is too far "tail down" ...indicated by only showing the 1st half of the arch ...

Now I doubt this has anything to do with your unit not showing the fish ID symbols ... But we gotta start somewhere ...

Thanks for the tip.  I'll tip it up a little bit and see if it makes  different with the arches and post the pic if it does.    If it does work I'll compensate the trim of the boat when I take out my fat buddies.  ;D

Hey Rickie, Looks like you may have pointed out the error in my ways.  I tilted the transponder a little bit and here is the first image I saw shortly after leaving my boat lift.  Do you see the little fishy at 13 feet?

Then I played a bit with the angle while underway.  This shot is when I changed the angle about 1/2 way through the image.  You can see the arches changed angles right when I grabbed the transducer with the boat hook.

I don't think all these signals are fish,,,,was pretty breezy today and lake is starting to turn over, so lot of junk signals.

Thanks for giving me hope and politely pointing out the errors in my ways.   Love the side-scan images, and while I look for structure to catch fish and avoid propeller problems, it would be nice to see the Fish ID work as advertised.

Later,
 TJ

Progress is great news ...!!

Are you running the latest software ...??

There still is the known bug of the fish id feature that is being addressed in some of the latest versions ...

I installed version 7.460 that came out December 22, 2014.  Think this is the latest version, and it did say in the e-mail I got that this version "Fixed blended beam FishID."    Sent the head unit back in a couple months ago to get the fix for the washout issue, and bought the HD transducer.  So on that I was kind of hoping to see little blue and orange fish on my screen this spring.   Will play around with it some more, but I am disappointed that HB would put a unit out that doesn't work as advertised out of the box. The small changes I made in the angle of the transducer would be off set if I had a heavy person moving around in the boat (16 foot Lund Rebel).  I can appreciate the need of a correct angle on the side imaging, but I can't a few degrees making such an issue with the fish ID.   Does ANYBODY have an 899 that has the fish ID work?

Thanks for letting me know there is a new version.  I just downloaded it and installed it in my unit.  The description of the 7.590 version says that the changes are

NEW FEATURES

Added support for the AS RC1 Bluetooth® Remote and Dongle

GENERAL CHANGES

Removed support for the Quadra Beam transducers

No mention of the Fish ID, but will see what happens next time I take the boat out if this wind stops blowing this evening.

Well, downloaded and installed software version 7.590.  Took the boat for a troll around the lake and still no joy with the Fish ID+.   Think I've found the happy spot for the transducer angle, as it looks like I get full arches now (thanks again Rickie).   Played with the settings to see if I could get any progress, and also was wondering if the menu settings would be captured in the snapshot.  Did manage to catch one nice smallmouth despite the water still being on the chilly side.

Do ya' think these are fish?   If so, wonder why they don't show up on the ID?   I have the alarm set and the fish ID on.

Have you tried the Beam Frequency on 83kHz ...and then separately on the 200kHz ...??

Greg mentioned the bug was with the blended 200kHz/83kHz setting ...

Yeah, I've tried every setting possible with the frequency settings, tried changing sensitivity ranges and surface clutter.  As a lot of people say, getting the little fish icon isn't really a big deal as you can see the fish and structure pretty good.  But I am wondering if it is just my unit that doesn't work as advertised or if it is an issue with all 899s out there.  Does anybody have an 899 where the Fish ID+ works??  I'll keep playing with it while fishing as it gives me something to do between the occasional strike.

I finally think that maybe the Fish ID+ is kinda' working.  The other day I marked a bunch of fish while trolling for salmon on another lake.  Thing is that they were almost all on the bottom, and this time of year even the touge should be shallower.  But it is an improvement for sure.  Maybe the fish ID isn't as optimistic as I am about those arches on the sonar really being fish.  But at least now I can show the kids the "fish" on the screen.

I would imagine those arches are indeed fish ... Just not big enough to match the criteria set forth in the unit Fish ID algorithms ...
