new boat
« on: March 02, 2010, 11:05:20 PM »
I just ordered a new boat and have already purchased an 1197c . If you where to have the ultimate set up in electronics what else would you do. Looking for other opinions, I will put my lowrance flasher in as well but I wanted to integrate 2 units front and back to have mirror image gps info. Will have a new terrova i -pilot up front . How does the interlink work and the weather deal work and what does a guy need to know before I start purchasing this stuff.

My $0.02

I would go with another Si capable Sonar + GPS unit up front than.  Which one depends on the size screen you want on the bow versus how much you are willing to spend.

You need to know that you can make use of the Humminbird Transducer exchange Program so that you can exchange the standard transom mount transducer for the trolling motor mounted one.  If you go with the smaller 798 unit than there is a trolling motor Si transducer made specifically for it.  If you go with the 898, 998 or another 1197 unit on the bow than you can contact them about the exchange for the trolling motor version of the HDSi transducer which is really the same as the transom mounted transducer but with different hardware.  Call the Humminbird Customer Resource folks at 1-800-633-1468 about the transducer exchange program.  Also, there are companies that make some slick aftermarket adapters as well like Transducer Shield & Saver and RaptorCap that not only allow the transom transducers to be mounted on the trolling motor but help protect the transducer from damage as well.

If that is a fiberglass boat I would consider mounting the transom mounted HDSi transducer up higher where it will work well for Si sonar but also where it will be more protected from damage as these are over $200 to replace.  I would couple this with the AS-Si-DB-Y Si-DB splitter cable and an inside-the-hull DualBeam 2D sonar transducer (XP-9-20) as the best location for high-speed depth readings is from a transducer mounted in the bilge area of a fiberglass boat.

I would mount the GPS Receivers for each unit as close to the transducer it will be using for the most accurate waypoint marking.

For the InterLink; everything you will need will come with it – module and connection cables.

Not sure which weather add-on module you are referring to but both the WeatherSense and the XM Nav Weather accessories come with all the connection cables you will need.

The easiest way would be to have someone take a snapshot in demo mode of the xm nav weather and weathersense screens.  (I think this can be done! Havent really tried it)

So if anyone with an 1197c could go into demo mode and go to the nav weather screen, take a snapshot and see if it works and post it here!

2000, I think your first screenshot was navweather and the 2nd from the weathersense module. If I remember the post I think it was in reference to navweather. I thought I would mention it so there was no confusion. Bob

The pic on top is from XM Satellite Weather Receiver, not sure I want to spend $30 per month for this service.  I can carry a weather radio to alert me on pending storms, Walmart sells them for about $30 and there is no subscription fee, these are necessary in Tornado Alley (Kansas n Oklahoma).  The bottom picture is Weathersense, I recently installed one on my boat.

George, the service is $9.99 per month. The cost of the receiver is the real bite! That being said, I have had one for the past year and am comforted by being able to see the rain approaching and how far away the lightning is as well as weather alerts no mater what screen I am currently looking at. For me It has been worth it. When zoomed in the graphics are useful but certainly not crisp. Bob

bob, technology is facinating.  what we dont have are wallets with green paper to buy all of the capabilities.  I wish we did.  Just think what we coudl have.  Sonar, AIS, Weather, radar both flat and aloft. Radios that talk for us.  hot and cold showers, coffee pots and maids.  the companies making these products dangle this in front of us, make us hungry and then broke.  there are a lot of items that are practicable and useful just not affordable. I drool over some of the items that are out there.  I guess we can hope for birthdays and christmas.   ;D    chuck

Thanks guys I suppose its one of those things you'll look at when you first get it then it will be just another screen you'll pass by to get to the one you want. I am still considering it as I do alot of fishing in Ontario and we dont have the weather channel or a radio signal to get info.

the weather screen is interesting and if you are out and storms approach by zooming in you will get a good detail of the storm and lightning.  you are right in that you can just skip over normally or even make it hidden until weather builds up then just make it visible.  I will try some zooms for you.  Chuck

This may help you make up your mind on the XM Nav Weather module:
“XM Nav Weather coverage is for contiguous United States only (the lower 48)”
So that rules out Ontario.

The WeatherSense on the other hand works anywhere there is air pressure.
