ram mount for 997 ?
« on: December 09, 2009, 04:39:09 PM »
I'm a proud new owner of a 997 and 788. What size ram mount is everyone using for the 997 on your consoles? any recommendations?

Do NOT use the smallest one...unless you have a 50hp engine or less...been there, the unit folds back easily over 40mph...whatever the next one up is...use that one...and tighten is very well...now I can do 70mph without the unit folding back..

That's what I'm afraid of. I was told the ram 111U will work fine. But ram mount website says to use the 111-D, or something like that. It is the big big one for $100. Just wondering if anyone uses the 111U. It has the 6.25"+ 2" plate.

I also just received a 997 and am looking for the best mount.  The ram I think will work the Best for me is a swung arm style.  But these still have the same smaller mounting plate around 6.25".   If you have any luck let me know and I'll do the same.

just installed my 997 on the 111U with the 1.5 balls. its pretty big and holds good. and only $40 or so bucks, compared to the $100 one.

My boat came with a RAM 111u that had a smaller sonar on it.  I removed the old sonar and reused the same mount for my 998c and it is working great!

Ram can be confusing with their model numbers.  This is the mount that has the 6.25" plate and the 1.5" ball.

I am speaking from expecience what an 1197 unit but I think it more then applies for all you guys.  I have the biggest ram mount that is offerd, the 100 dollar one.  It has more then enough "lenght" to get the big 1197 away from the consoule for mounting and when tightened down I run 65 mphs across the lake and it has never moved.  Just my two cents.

Hey,   I use the 2.25" ball here look at that this photo--RAM-D-111U--i got mine for like $60 somewhere like an ebay.

Hope this photos helps--i got the long shaft so i can turn it towards the bow and see my pretty 997 from the front.

I have a 997 mounted on a 1.5 inch ram mount.  In my experience running thru large waves it will not keep the unit fixed no matter how tight  the mount.   If  you want a rock solid mount for rough water go for the larger 2.25 inch mount.

You should use the largest ball they have for sure.....why take the chance on a $2000 unit.

If you want to spice it up.....you can do what I did......

Mount a low profile downrigger pedestal that pivots and then mount the ram ball to that.  This way with a quick pull of the pin your can swivel the whole unit around to be visible from the bow.  This is WAY easier than dealing with the ram ever time you want to twist it around.

tmljunkmail, can you post a picture of your complete set-up?  I have a new 998 and am looking for the "perfect" mounting method.  Thanks.

In regards to ram mounts, the "letter" in the model number represents the ball size, farther in alphabet the letter = bigger the ball size.  try Ebay,There is an "Ebay store" that has the biggest mount (2.25" ball) for $86.00 including shipping
