ALL SI Models - Additional Ethernet Connection Port
« on: March 25, 2014, 10:17:47 AM »
Model:
ALL SI Models
Suggested Upgrade:
Additional Ethernet Connection Port
Explanation:
It would really be helpful for the many of us that are linking two units to share data via ethernet , and to still be able to link at least one more ethernet accessory , like I Pilot Link without having to ad a very expensive 5 port ethernet switch that has to be also connected to your 12volt system ,and two more ethernet cables .
With the addition of one more ethernet connection port on the combo units it would be much less expensive and less difficult to rig up , not to mention the fact that you might only have to buy & intsall only one ethernet cable (less than $50 ) verses buying  and installing a 5 port switch and at the very least two ethernet cables (up to $300 or more ) and a mess more wires and cables in your boat .

x2 on that.  I did that very thing.  and had to purchase the switch and extra cables + paying my marina $$$ to do the install.  It ended up being very expensive

To allow those two units and the i-Pilot Link to communicate you would still need three Ethernet Connection Cables (actually one comes with the i-pilot Link), plus the Ethernet switching function would now have to be duplicated within each unit design (increasing the cost of each unit).  It may be cheaper to go with the 5-Port Ethernet Switch.  Also think about all of those who will never Ethernet connect their unit.  You would be forcing them to pay for additional circuitry that they will never use.

Yea. If you have the $ for two or more SI units and Ipilot link, whats a few more duckies anyways. :)

For me taking a Standard ethernet gigabit Switch for a few EUR works pretty well. Just had to cut the ethernet cable and fit a Standard RJ45 connector to it as the original M12/8 Connector was not available to buy separately in the Internet - at least I did not find it...

I have thought about experimenting with that also. I thought this would be a shortcut. but price kept me from ordering

Yeah, 4 or 5 of those are going to get more expensive than the HB switch.

Hi Bob,

For the wirering, just have a look at

I also did some analyses on the data stream on the ethernet connection:

HTH.

Best regards,
