ALL Models with chartplotters - High Accuracy GPS with compass
« on: November 20, 2009, 12:34:13 PM »
Model:
ALL SI Models
Suggested Upgrade:
High Accuracy GPS with compass
Explanation:
Now that the AS GRHA has been discontinued as is not available, how about a updated version with a built in electronic compass that would allow the units to maintain the boat icon with respect to the boat orientation instead of just the direction the receiver is moving? This would benifit those of us who are frequently trying to maintain a chart view in front of the boat while drifting backwards. It would also be great for everyone else that frequently finds the boat indicating the wrong direction  due to no or slow movement.

Then on the units, give us the option of track up (direction of travel), North up, or boat up (direction boat is pointed) as to how the mapping is displayed. This would allow the option of having the map "back up" when the baot  was reversing instead of rotating 180 degrees from the direction you were pointed if you have selected boat up as the chart display.

I too have desired a indicator pointing out north even when the boat is stationary or moving very slowly as when hovering over a deep brush pile.

Rocketman,

Yeah, that is one of my issues as well. The chart swinging around all kind of directions when you move back five or ten feet because the unit is trying to decide what direction you are moving.

I like the idea but think combining the two would only end up down the path of the GHRA, and quick obsolencence.  Both combined, would probably be a MSRP for $299.   How about an electronic compass module that could be added to any gps capable unit?  The functions requested, do not have to be combined with the high accuracy receiver.  Also, it will need to be accuratly mounted for referance orientation and that might not be the best location for the gps.  The module alone might have a more palletable MSRP of $99.
If it bends my rod, I'm a happy fisherman.

Rather no Compass in a GPS receiver. Compass is okay, but a separate gyro on the bottom of the boat gives much more stable readings.

Groet,

John,

I think your idea is a valid one as well. I was just thinking that having the two items in one may allow more people to justify the higher price for the GHRA and cause higher sales.

A compass module may be a good addition to the wish list, or at least the ability to make use of the data from existing products in the software?

When we have a compass, please make the unit Lowrance/Northstar/Simrad Broadbandradar compatible.
The I can keep the 1197 and sell my Simrad CX44E.
